Collection purchased by another agency

I have a very old collection account - 1999- it is about to fall off but of course it has been sold and the new collection agency reports the date assigned as this month??? Can they do that? What should I do?

Thats the bad part about unpaid collections they can be sold and re-reported right up to the 7 yr mark.  How long is it til it falls off.  I woudl start by requesting a validation of debt from the new CA and disputing it with the CRAs if you never received noticfication from the new OCA.  That may have it removed and tied up long enough for nature to take its course and the 7 years to run out.  the most important thing is to be sure that this new OCA hasn't change the DOLD when rereporting it. so no matter what they do it will still fall off in the 7 yr time frame.

Re: Collection purchased by another agency

The account is from 2000 they say that the last payment date is 2003 (which is not the case). Can I dispute the last payment date??

Was the account opened in 2000 or was the delinquency in 2000?  The time that it can remain on the report is determined by the date of last delinquency.  If this item was paid as agreed until 2003 you have until 2010 for that thing to be sold and resold.  The question is when did it go delinquent?

DV the CA, and dispute with the CRAs.

Re: Collection purchased by another agency

They can and they got your attention. As soon as you want to fix your credit seems like things come out of nowhere.

CA's can be brutal. Call and let them know you have some questions and you believe that the information is inaccurate. I guess sometimes they have a hard time keeping up with the older debts. See what they have to say about the debt and see if you can get it removed or deleted.

Since it is old they may work with you. Depending on the cost of the debt it maybe worth it to pay for delete if you have the money. I had debts that were falling off in april, june, aug, and oct of this year but since my goal is a house I paid it. It looks better when applying for new credit that nothing shows as a derog.

I was able to obtain a personal loan despite a low fico because all my bills were paid and current and I took care of all collections and charge offs on my credit report.

You may even see a temp drop in score once it is removed due to the hx aspect.

Best of luck!

Re: Collection purchased by another agency

I don't call, and I don't talk to 'em on the phone. I don't scare easy, but it just seems a waste of time.

Now, if I lived in a "one party state" for the recording of phone calls, you can bet yer bippy I'd be talking to 'em on the phone. Heck, I'd probably call 'em up just to confirm their information, find out the weather there, or check on the status of the new highway.

Good advice. Always stay off the phone with a CA. All correspondence should be in writing.
