I had a loan with credit acceptance in il 2017. Moved to Cali same yr. was paying fine lost my job in Cali and my car got impounded for parking tickets in may 2018. Car was still registered in Illinois. California auctioned off my car in oct 2018 bc i couldn’t pay impound fees or get a Payment plan bc my car was registered in Illinois. They sent letters to me, sos of il and credit acceptance. Sold the car. I moved past it. Months later in jan/feb 2019 they (credit acceptance) sent me a letter saying they repo’d my car and i could get it back by paying. I was confused i called them and said how can you repo a car that has a new owner? They were confused stating they didn’t get a letter from SOS CA. Then a few days later Saud they didn’t repo it. I know they got the letter bc i got one and it had them listed. So i don’t hear from them all 2019 then in April 2020 they are charging me lates on my credit report And were not reporting anything all 2019.
How can i stop this? Do i need to settle ?! I’ve gotten another car since then bc it’s not a repo.
I certainly could be wrong but you probably owe the difference between the balance of loan and what the car was sold for.

The car was sold by the state of California and not credit acceptance. They telling me i owe the entire balance. But California became the Lein holder and sold the car.

I confused on how Cali took ownership on a car another had a lien on. Im hoping another member here with more knowledge than I can assist you.
So, who got the excess money from the auction? I'm sure what it sold for was more than the impound fees.

I have no idea the impound fees, and it might have been high bc the car was sold after 7 months almost in impound.
