Credit score boost

I recently added my wife into my american express costco account as an additional card member, Will this itself increase her line of credit by $20000 since my costco american express credit card limit is $20,000? I desperately need to increase her score from 720 to 740 to obtain a better mortgage rate. Her transunion is currently at 720.

If the above is true, how can I trigger an immediate reporting to update her credit history with transunion?

Thanks and answers very much appreciated!!

Re: Credit score boost

Adding her will certainly boost her score as long as  AMEX reports AU accts, most notably, to TU.  You can ask AMEX to (please!) do an acct update to the 3!  The cra's only report what the accts send, so asking TU or the others is fruitless.

How much will this raise her score?  Hard to say.  She should have at least one cc acct posting a small balance to show a real util%.  If she's got a 0 balance across the board...0% of whatever limit is still 0.  Even a buck posted will activate a real util% number.

Good luck!

Re: Credit score boost

Thanks for the answer!!

I have been trying to talk to Amex credit department to update the information to the credit bureaus but it has been very frustrating since they keep saying that it would take 30-90 days.

1) Can a rapid rescore immediately update my wife's information from American Express to the credit bureaus?

2) I don't remember giving my wife's SSN, do I have to explicitly provide my wife's SSN to Amex?

Re: Credit score boost

OP, when is your next statement date?

A SSN isn't needed to add someone as an AU. In fact, virtually all CCCs don't ask for a SSN. How they add, I have no clue, but I wouldn't worry about the SSN.

Re: Credit score boost

My next statement date is probably on 15th. But its not necessary that the statement date be the same as the date on which an account is reported to the credit bureaus.

1) Will my wife's credit report show American Express as a credit card only if I submit her SSN?

2) Will a rapid rescore help trigger an update to the bureaus?

Re: Credit score boost

Actually, the statement cut date being the date they report is the "norm".  Don't take my word...ask around.  Folks here will tell you.

Re: Credit score boost

I am an AU on one of my mother's cards. We had to specifically request that the card be reported on my credit report, and was asked for my SS number at that time.

Just having this card appear on your wife's credit report as an AU will not do much for her FICO, unless it affects her average age of accounts positively, and/or she has a current high utilization on the cards she has reporting now and therefore adding this one with 0 balance will change her utilization %.

Simply adding another card will not affect her score if she already has <9% utilization on her current cards since credit limits don't matter, it's the utilization % that calculates into FICO.

In my case, adding my mother's card increased my average age of accounts from 1 year to 9 years so it increased my score significantly. Utilization remained the same since we both pay our cards in full so they show $0 balance, which is something we need to change because one of the things hurting my score is that it appears I'm not 'using' credit since they are reporting $0 balances. Keeping a balance so the utilization is <=9% will show that I am using credit responsibly and will increase my score more than if I always paid in full each month.

Re: Credit score boost

Thanks Bungalowmo, Big Chad!!

I had an experience couple of years ago when I added my wife as a "joint owner" on dcu - this itself helped boost her score by 30-40 points,

because apparently she inherited my 6 year history. Now I wanted to do the same with Amex costco with which I have a 5 year history, Amex doesn't have the concept of a joint owner and can only add a family member as an additional card member. I was hoping to exactly boost my wife's score by 20-30 points by doing this.

Also, I was hoping that her total credit increases by $20K and hence decreases her utilization %.

Could you please verify if I'm doing the right thing?
