I paid off one of my credit cards, but my CRs still show a balance for this account. It is falsely increasing my util by 4%, which is not the end of the world... but just inaccurate. The last reported date is November 2011. Short of filing a dispute with the company, does anyone have suggestions on how I can "nudge" the creditor into updating this account?

Call and speak to a CSR with the creditor about it, they should be able to send a manual update.
If your "nudge" should need a "push," you might remind them that maintaining the accuracy and completeness of reported information is a requirement of FCRA 623(a)(2).
The statue requires that they "promptly" update. Going on four months is a bit less than "prompt."
I called the creditor again this morning and the first CSR I spoke with wanted to debate with me and insisted that it had to be the credit bureaus' fault (EQ, TU and EX) that they were not up-to-date. "We send updates every Friday," she said. After demanding to speak with a supervisor, I was transferred to someone (I wrote down her name) who promised to process a manual update. According to her, my CBRs should be accurate within 48 hours. We shall see!
If not, I will try the "push" approach, RobertEG. Thank you guys for the information and encouragement.

I think you'll see the update, companies can do manual updates.
I'm dealing with one and they STILL have not updated. Its also a card from Nov and shows a higher balance. I finally did submit a dispute but its just sitting there. I get no where with the credit card agency.

The creditor must have updated the report as promised. I got a SW email today (3/8), and my EQ FICO increased by 31 points! I can't believe it. I will pull a report to verify, but I don't think any other substantial elements changed. My most recent previous SW email was on 3/2, and my score increased 4 points then.
The person that coined the phrase, "knowlege is power" was right! Understanding the credit system, paying attention and taking the right measures to manage your credit, even as tiny steps, really works. Thanks for the help!

I totally understand how frustrating that can be. Seems like it should not be so hard. Hopefully the dispute will lead to action - soon! If not, be sure to come back to this forum. Some of the community members are true experts, so I'm sure they could offer additional advice.
