I just got a dark web alert with Discover and all they can tell me is to put an alert on the CRA and hope for the best. I put an alert on. Can I still be put on the opt in for prescrean offers?

A dark web alert could be anything. I wish all of these monotoring services would give you the actual site. That way I can take the .onion file and open Tor and see it for myself.

What information did they find? It could be anything personal;

  • SSN
  • Email Address
  • Password
  • CC Number

If your SSN was found, I would freeze all CRs. If it is a CC number, just get a new number. Email address just means you will get more spam. And if it is a password, just change all of your passwords. I use LastPass and keep different passwords for each site.

Re: Dark Web Alert

I'm interested in that Lastpass you mentioned Sloedough. What is that?

It is a password manager. It is hard to explain here so checkout their site.

It took me a bit but I got all sites into LastPass, all with different passwords. So if Facebook gets hacked, I don't have to change all passwords. LastPass also scans the "dark web" for your emails, usernames and passwords. There are other password managers and LastPass is usually ranked #1.

I don't really understand Dark Web alerts.  Can someone shed some light?  I've been getting alerts for a couple of months now that my email was found on the Dark Web.  I haven't done anything about it, nor do I know if this is important or not.

Most of the CMS or card issuer provided "dark web" monitoring tools give minimal info about email/username/password breaches.

For real info on the issue, you'll want to check your email addresses (and previous passwords, if you want to) through Troy Hunt's tool at https://haveibeenpwned.com - it'll show you where the data was lost from, and what types of info were included in the breach.

(Yes, the site is legitimate. Yes, the name is ...terrible, I know.)
