Dates on collections question...

I recently paid off a debt to Asset Acceptance for something I never knew existed.  Basically what happened was that when I was 20 (in 2001) I was in college and completely irresponsible.  I was moving out of a house I was renting and neglected to shut off my electrical.  (For what reason, I have no idea.)  To make matters worse, I also didn't realize I needed to have my mail forwarded.  To make a long story short, in february I received a collections letter for $443 in unpaid bills to First Energy.  Apparently the guys who moved in after me lived for a few months on my dime.  I settled it with AA so as to have it taken care of and as I'd not really stumbled upon this great resource.

My question is this...on my credit report, it now lists the debt as from 2007, although the actual delinquiencies happened in 2001.  Is this right or can I have it changed to when the crap actually happened.  Something from 2001 will come off next year...something from 2007...

You get the idea...

An extension of this...

I thought about writing a GW to try and have the whole thing removed.  Is it even worth it?  I'm now hearing nightmares about Asset Acceptance.  So do I really have a chance of it working?

A GW letter can never hurt. The worst thing they can do is say no. Be persistent and friendly!

Thanks!  I suppose you're right.  What about handling the dispute between the dates on my CR?

Re: Dates on collections question...

Dispute this with the CRA's as "incorrect" as it legally is. Since, the debt is from 2001, they are illegally reporting it incorrectly.

I would not waste time with a GW letter as the collection agency is aware that the debt is almost 7 years old and they will most likely ignore it.

They will have to provide proof to the CRA's that the debt occured recently. They will not legally be able to do this. So, you may get lucky and have it deleted, if not definitely have it adjusted to reflect the proper dates and it will fall off shortly anyways.

Goodluck.

Re: Dates on collections question...

My next question is this:  How do I dispute this?  What I mean is, is there a proper wording I would use to dispute the date itself, or do I just say "not accurate" or something generic?

Thanks for the help so far.  I'm learning a lot.

I would dispute as "inaccurate"
