I noticed that on my Experian report (and nowhere else), it has my correct name and a "formerly known as" name that is incorrect. It's my brother's name, in fact. Anyhow, I first tried to do an online dispute, but when I clicked on that item, it tells me to call their phone number instead.
Fine. I call them, go through the automated process, then I'm put on hold for about 15 minutes for a rep to become available. Finally, I get a human voice and after explaining the situation, he pulls some info and tells me that Discover is reporting that erroneous information. I'm a little puzzled because I had that card back in 2001 and I closed it a few years later (not sure when).
So anyway, I call Discover to clear this up. Thing is, I tell the lady my social security number, and they don't even have me in their files anymore! Then we try other info, and she can't find me in the system anywhere. That confuses me because they still seem to be reporting information about me on my credit report. I thank her for her trouble, and hang up.
But now, I'm stuck wondering what the heck to do next. I realize this probably doesn't affect my score in any way, but I still don't want bad info on my report. Plus, I don't want to somehow drag my brother down with me (he has excellent credit).
Any ideas? Should I just wait it out?
