Debt collector lawyers

So my fiancé missed a couple payments on his lowes credit card with Synchrony Bank. Then he paid a couple months only half what was the payment due. The times he did talk to someone and make a payment they took the payment over the phone and didn't charge his card more or say anything about going into collections. If they called his phone they didn't leave a message about any collections. So in July apparently the acct went into collections. In August he called and made a $100 payment. Again he made this payment by calling the number on the credit card bill as always and they took the $100 never saying anything about collections. Monthly bills were still coming. At the time he made the last payment he owed $600 and change. So it should have dropped to $500 and change. It was the end of Aug or begin of Sept he started getting calls from a lawyer company about a debt. We thought it was some debt scam at first. Then we got a letter stating that his lowes credit card was bought by this lawyer office. The letter basically just said it was bought by the lawyers and they would be contacting us soon. So I told him not to pay anything until we figure it out. We also had no idea where we were suppose to be making payments to. He called the bank where he had been making the payments and they said it wasn't their acct anymore she couldnt help us. We have been back and forth over the phone with this lawyer office since and the people have been very rude and not very helpful to explain things to us. They are demanding we make a payment for the $600 and change. Yet he paid $100 in Aug. the lady told me that's correct but her office bought the debt for that amount after that payment so that is the amount they will collect from him.
I don't understand how any of this really works and she just kept repeating herself saying they bought the debt from collections for a certain amount so that's what they had to collect. I don't consider myself stupid... but she sure as hell made us feel like idiots. Every time I asked her what happen to that last $100 she went into the same circle like a script.
She also said the only way we could pay is check by phone or debit card. He asked during one of our back and forth calls about sending a money order and they rudely said no not accepted. He's asked several times for some kind of documentation on the acct and was even hung up on once. Finally today after 20 mins on the phone with the lady talking circles she said she could send out an invoice. Hello! That's what we had been asking for.
Anyways so can anyone help simplify how this all works and what happened to our $100 is it just gone? Can you make payment arrangements with these things? If we give them a debit card are they just going to charge the full amount? We don't have hat in our checking acct. Because when we ask they just say they need to collect it in full.
Any suggestions or adive?

Re: Debt collector lawyers

By law she must send you a letter within 30(?) days about this debt. A dunnings notice.  If no such letter arrives, then this is probably scams.
