I filed a dispute with Equifax on Sept 6. It is for a collection account that was paid in full over a month ago, but never updated (the original creditor still owns the debt, and their practice is generally to recall it from the collector). Along with my dispute, I attached the receipt from the online payment that I made - over $5,000.
When I checked the status, up until today, it said that it was expected to be resolved by October 6, which made sense to me, being that the limit is usually 30 days. I logged in just now, and the date has been moved up to September 30.
2 Questions:
1. Has anyone seen the date move up? What can that mean?
2. I've read competing things about 30 days vs. 45 days if documents are submitted. Does the fact that I attached a receipt push their regulated response time to 45 days? The way I read it, it's if you provide ADDITIONAL information after the fact, but iv'e seen conflicting things online.
Thanks!
The CRA normally has up to 30 days from the date of filing of the disptue to conclude their reinvestigation.
They may conclude their reinvestigation earlier if they receive the response from the furnisher and reach their determination. I would suspect that in your situation, they received the reply from the debt collector and was thus able to conclude their renvestigation earlier.
However, even if they dont hear back from the furnisher, they must coclude their reinvetigation within the statutory period, so they cannot extend.
Presentation of ducmentation with the dispute as filed is the primary method by which a consumer will support their assertion of inaccuracy, and that does not extend the reinvestigation period. It is when the consumer sends additional information after initial filing of the dispute that the period is extended to 45 days.
However, the CRA has an addtiional five business days after expiration of the period for renivestigation to mail (or, if the consumer has consented, send electronially) their Notice of Results of Reinvestigation. Thus, it can be a week or more after conclusion of the reinvestigation before the Notice is in the hands of the consumer.
