Disturbing email from Discover!

On 10/16 the email said that they discovered my SSN in the dark web.  I keep my credit reports frozen and also my Chex. Anyone else in my situation?

Re: Disturbing email from Discover!

I get these monthly nothing new . Yes best to have reports on freeze, however your data is out there through financial institutions etc.

Re: Disturbing email from Discover!

Like many of us, @akaFettHutt, you may have been involved in a **HUGE** recent data breach.  This does not appear to be just any ordinary data breach.  It's in a league of it's own for the breadth or data and consumers affected.  Websearch the "National Public Data" breach from August 2024.   There are posts on this forum and Reddit about it, as well as tons of news articles.  Many of our members are getting these alerts now, and yes, the great majority of Americans have had their data exposed in one or more of these breaches.

Re: Disturbing email from Discover!

As others have said, I receive these periodically now. I'm signed up to various subscriptions that will alert me when my data is found on the dark web, etc.  I keep my accounts locked only unlock if I'm app'ng( immediately re-lock). I saw that you can only put something like a freeze or extra layer of security on your social security number as well.

Re: Disturbing email from Discover!

@akaFettHutt  I can imagine the feeling you had finding out that information about your SSN because I was also disturbed when I found out a couple weeks ago that my SSN was also exposed on the dark web.

Generally I receive and have received for years alerts of  personal info exposed on the dark web BUT this time was definitely different. This time my actual SSN, addresses, phone numbers etc were exposed. All the info needed to fill out any credit, loans, etc. apps.

The Breach (National Public Data) in August was Monstrous.

One must remain Vigilant in securing Credit Reports, Using Alert Features and Monitoring Credit statuses.
