Doesn't Make Any Sense

My daughter went to the hospital in December....while we were visiting Texas..from Louisiana...she had Louisiana Medicaid...which covers EVERYTHING....they don't pay for regular out of state bills...bu they do cover emergency room bills...ANYWAY

I have been being billed for the visit since December...then I finally realized...Medicaid was supposed to cover the initial emergency room bill...I call...they are saying they wrote it off...saying a $0 balance is due....and I was never supposed to be billed...but then she said...Medicaid denied the claim...

I kept asking her...does this mean it will go on my credit reports...since it was wrote off..and from December...she kept assuring me this WILL NOT go on my reports..and was not sent to collections...

WHAT DOES WROTE OFF MEAN???...IS SHE RIGHT???...I'M CONFUSED!!!

When you say that the bill was written off, I assume that it is the hospital that wrote off the bill, is that correct? If this is the case, then you are no longer being charged for the ER visit. You owe them no money. As long as they didn't use the terms "charged off" or "referred for collection", then you're okay. Why they did this is another matter. It could be that they are disputing the denial from Medicaid and anticipate getting reimbursement. It's also possible that the hospital has a certain amount of money set aside for charitable care, and your daughter's visit happened to fall into this category. If the charges were minimal - a quick check in the ER but no expensive blood tests or imaging or procedures - then the hospital might have just thought it would be more willing to write off the expense.

Get it in writing. Get a copy of the hospital billing statement showing the zero balance. See if you can get the billing office to write a short letter explaining the write off of the debt.

Re: Doesn't Make Any Sense

Yes...she said written off...and the bill was for $752...she initially went for a fever...on a Wednesday...back on a Friday...and was admitted...for 3 days...due to dehydration...because if a small infection...so no..it was not simple...

I t might have been due to a charitable thing...I know she was prescribed a medicine that was almost $200..and I was furious...because I knew Medicaid would pay ALL of this..and we would have to come out of pocket...if we had to...we were willing to pay...but some way the doctor...used some type of organization...but her being from out of state...I'm happy...that's good...and my wonderful child...good for now..but boy when she hit the terrible two's...in a couple of month...that's the worry...HAHA!!!

I think I have a better idea of what happened in your case. The $752 bill is way too low to be the actual charges from the hospital for all the treatment that your daughter received. That would be less than the typical room charge for a day. What probably happened is the the TX hospital sent a bill to LA Medicaid for, let's say, $5000. LA Medicaid reimbursed a certain amount, but it was less than what they expected to get. The hospital tried to submit a claim for the difference, but Medicaid denied the claim. In the meantime, it appeared as a balance due on your account. TX hospitals are probably required by law to accept reimbursement rates of out-of-state government payers, even if it fall below TX's reimbursement rate. So, the TX hospital was obligated to write off the difference. Whether they were trying to be sneaky by billing you for the difference or whether it was a quirk in the billing system is another debate, but the bottom line is that you are free of any debt to the hospital.

And yes, the terrible twos can really be terrible. And they don't always end when they turn 3!

Re: Doesn't Make Any Sense

I received my last bill from them on May 16th..and she said it was written off on may 27th...so I shouldn't receive any more bills...and I think your right...Medicaid will only cover for emergency room visits...when out of state...no inpatient...and maybe the bill I received....was only for the impatient services...

THANKS FOR YOU HELP!!!...

Re: Doesn't Make Any Sense

Yep, its a "Contractual Write Off" for accepting the Medicaid.

Insurance is amazing, but extremely frustrating when the bills for deductibles, co pays etc. come in and they aren't correct!
