Does it bother anyone else that non credit requesting inquiries report as HP. Why not a softpull instead of a HP for places like, insurance companies, utilities, apartments, jobs, etc.
My inquiries look like ive applied for credit 14 times in the past two years, however, 3 inq. were apartments, 8 were jobs (banking), and only 3 were credit related seeking.
I understand the need for these places to see my credit, but what am I missing as to why they are doing HP instead of SP?
Utilities did a hard pull? Mine were soft. Did you authorize them to pull it hard?
mine didnt, but Ive read others stating that utility companies have HP them. The only ones Ive had HP me were apartments and jobs so far. I dont let others do that, but I have to live somewhere and I have to work lol so I had no choice with those.
I was just annoyed with my field of work when I looked for a job It looked like I was seeking tons of credit! add that to a short employment history once I found a job and I was pretty down. Also, I understand the apartments need to see credit, but I was just wondering why the HP instead of SP. Is there a specific reason they do HP? can they see more? Do creditors care when they see your inquries reason was housing or employment? or do they just view it the same?

Verizon is a HP (at least for Fios) I wish I knew that BEFORE I was going to pull the trigger a about a year ago on fios but decided to wait since they said I'd have to put a rather large deposit down. Hadn't pulled my free reports yet and then went and eventually ordered it a couple months later which then resulted in a SECOND hard pull! I didn't find this out till I pulled my annual reports. Learned that lesson quick.
I think inquireis are inquiries for some creditors. I think if you were applying for a job they'd be able to tell that it was another potential employer but if you app for a CC or something thats online for instant approval/denial then the computer might not care if you were looking for a job/apartment but just care that 5 people were pulling your credit reports.
First and foremost, in the eyes of the FCRA, the inquiree either has a permissible purpose or they dont. With the exception of promotional offers for credit not initiated by the consumer, the FCRA places zero restrictions on coding of inquiries. The terms "hard" or "soft" inquiry are not mentioned in the FCRA.
Coding of inquiries is purely an administrative concoction of the CRAs, and its inner workings remain, at least to me, a total mystery.
There are clearly certain types of inquires that have associated codes that restrict their viewing by others in your credit report, such as pulls of your own CR, and internal account reviews by existing creditors. Ergo, they are not consdered by FICO, and are "soft" under establised practice.
The FCRA provides permissible purpose for business entities not involved in the extension of actual credit to a consumer to pull your credit report, provided they have a "legitimate business purpose" for that information. FCRA 604(a)(3)(F). So, the mystery of what codes are provided for that purpose arises. Do the CRAs provide two alternate codes, one stating "legitimate business purpose, but dont include in the consumer's credit report" and another for "legitimate business purpose, no CR exclusion"? If so, are businesses, who arent usually involved in credit reporting, saavy to those distinctions?
Is a business entity even required to provide ANY coding along with their inquiry? If not, then how does the CRA make the distinction? Maybe the inquiree is not even part of the HP vs SP determination.
A huge mystery to me. I have never seen an answer from any reliable source, such as the CRAs.
While you may not think of opening phone service, utilities, renting an apartment, etc. as seeking credit, it is, and that's exactly why it's hard pull from most companies. Any type of postpay service you receive is a LOC, just not in the traditional sense.

Most cable TV/internet/phone providers will now do a hard pull without you realizing it.
