Found 2 Drawbacks to my Score

Hello all,

After a long time, I got an opportunity to look at my credit reports, and I found two problems holding me back.  Any helpful information would be appreciated.

First, an old Bank One (now Chase) card appears as a CO on my report.  I had stopped using the card in 2005, so I don't know where the new balance came from, but the CO was reported this very month.  How difficult would it be to get this off if I call them next week?

Second, a debt collection notice has also shown up on my account.  The original creditor is Time Warner Cable.  Can the collection notice be removed also?  I am willing to pay the amount.  Also, would it be more helpful to call the CA or Time Warner?

Thank you.

Re: Found 2 Drawbacks to my Score

Have the CO validated.
Offer PFD on Time Warner.

Re: Found 2 Drawbacks to my Score

First off...WELCOME!  We're glad to have you.

The card that you stopped using in 2005, did you pay the balance down to 0? And actually call and close it? Also did the card have an annual feel?  Cause it doesn't matter if you're not using it, unless it was closed by you, they'll charge the annual fee.

What is the balance now?  Can you pay it?  This is the time for a PFD letter to try to get rid of it.

For the cable bill same thing.  How much is it?  You also want to send a PFD letter here as well.

Hope that helps!

Re: Found 2 Drawbacks to my Score

First, thank you all for your great replies.

Tex, you're right, I should get both the CO and the collection validated. Although the idea disagrees with my general sloth, I guess I'm not going to argue with you about the need to have everything in writing. Smiley Happy

Trini, I did pay it off completely, but I did not close the account because I was told that might hurt my credit. Obviously, I should have gone ahead and done it. It doesn't have an annual fee, so I'm going to have to call Chase to figure out the source of the balance (~$300). The cable bill is about $50, and I am willing to pay off both. I guess the PFD is the way to go as you said. Is it even worth contacting Time Warner anymore, or should I just deal with the CA? Thanks again.

Well then you need to call them to explain the charges.
And yes, PFD would be the way to go.

With the Cable bill, I'd call Time Warner first, if you can work with the OC its always better than dealing with the CA. Unfortunately once the account is sold to the CA then you'll have no other choice but to work the with CA, in that case I recommend limiting communication with them to in writing only.

Re: Found 2 Drawbacks to my Score

Trini, thanks for being such a great help.  Are you from Trinidad?  I had a great friend in college who was from there, and he was a really helpful person.  So it might be something in the water...

I was advised by the person to who recommended myFico to me to go ahead and dispute the CO and the collection with the three agencies.  But this is not a situation that can be resolved with a dispute, right?

Thanks again!  Smiley Happy

Yes, I am from Trinidad, and while we are generally nice people, I have to say, I'm the nicest of them allSmiley Very Happy.......totally kidding.

We do not recommend disputing information that we know to be accurate.  It's one thing if it's too old to be on your report, or you know for a fact that it's not yours, or the info. is inaccurate in some way.  If it is yours the way to go is to get the matter settled.
