I received a text message on Friday night stating that I had won a $1000.00 Best Buy gift card. The first sentence in the text message says Your entry last month has WON! This followed by the URL you can goto to claim your prize. The URL has bestbuy in the URL but it is NOT the best buy website. Oh really, I have not been in Best Buy since late last year. So I called Best Buy they confirmed what I had thought it was fraud and they were aware of it and were investigating. I searched the internet it looks like the scam has been happening since last 2011. The same type of scam is also happening with Walmart as well. Do not even goto the web site they had reports your computer can pick up malware from the site as well.
I have got similar text messages stating Walmart and Apple gifts. I text back random profanities
My opinion it is another way steal an identity. Why? The ones making the offer are not affiliated with Best Buy the premise of text message is that it is from Best Buy.
I'd argue that it's more for malware/spam purposes.
I also suggest sending a complaint to the FTC, who has legal authority to investigate and bring action.
If they have other related complaints, it could tweak their interest.....
Robert,
Currently two companies are investigating this Best Buy and my cell phone carrier. You idea of sending a complaint to FTC is a good idea.
That type of fraud alerts are common in media like Mobile, E-mail etc. I usally receive lots of froud sms through my cell phone.
