I ran my credit reports/FICO scores for the first time in a long time and the report analyer suggested I open a credit card account to improve my FICO score. Apparently I don't currently have any revolving accounts showing up on the reports (I have a credit card but its not reported to the bureaus). My credit scores are TU 637 EQ 633 and I'm concerned that I'll be denied for any credit cards I apply for. Are there any credit cards out there I'd be guaranteed to get approval for? I'm not too concerned with the APR or credit limit because I won't use the card much, just enough to benefit my FICO score.
Also, I have a car loan that gets paid off next month after 6 years... any ideas of how my FICO will be affected when that loan gets paid off?
Thanks in advance for any suggestions or comments.
Thanks for all the info... I'd forgotten about secured credit cards. I've had a checking/savings account with BOFA for 15 years and the car loan I'm paying off is through them as well. Do you know if I can apply for a secured card online or is it better to go into a branch?
Thanks again!
A credit union should be your first choice for a cc.
When your car loan gets paid off, your score will drop since you will no longer have an installment loan on your file, but it's impossible to say by how much.
I did the preapproval thing on BOFA's website and did not get prequalified for any cards. I'm going to go the secured card route because I don't want to hassle with getting denied a bunch of times and then having my FICO go down because of multiple inquiries. Do you guys think it matters how much I put down for a secured card? Would it be better to have a $1000 secured card vs a $300 one?
