Hey everyone,
I have a bit of a pickle. I back in May 2021 went to my cu to close my account. Took my money out and told the teller to close it she said she did as long as I didn't have any direct deposits etc coming in it would close. Fast forward to August I checked to see if it was closed. I noticed I owed about 200 dollars. I sent them a secured message and 2 weeks later they responded. I apparently had a credit card payment attempt to take payment so they took it from my overdraft credit. They now reported my account over 60 days late without ever contacting btw. Is there a way to get the negative mark off? I know about the goodwill letter but I am leaving the bank and I they know as well. Any help would be appreciated
I think Credit Unions are more friendly than commercial banks. Ask them and explain the details. They will be more than happy to help you.

Did the teller give you anything in writing acknowledging closing your account? Did she say what time-frame they would still honor "direct deposits etc"? To me, closed means closed RIGHT NOW. A direct deposit that attempts to come in after an account is closed should be redirected back to the source. Ditto for a credit card payment. I don't see why they paid the CC after you'd closed the account. If they had rejected the CC payment, as they should have, they and the CC company would've contacted you and you wouldn't be in this mess!
And you're quite sure they really haven't contacted you? They just let the account go 60 days late and then reported it, without ever sending you any kind of notice? That's very odd.
The only hope I can see is if you convince the CU that *they* erred by making the CC payment from a closed account. Have you reviewed the terms and conditions of your CU account to see if there's anything about lag time between closing an account and actually having it CLOSED? Anything that says they'll still honor transactions after you close the account? If there is nothing like that, you should be able to get them to straighten this out by basically saying "you're at fault, so please fix it!"

This makes no sense. Its like we'll close the door but wont lock it. It time to back to that CU and speak to a CSR and get this right. Any bank or CU gives you some type of document which shows closed before you leave as proof in case of fraud, hack or whatever. This isnt passing the smell test. But on your end. You shouldn't have waited 3 months either to check. So its a 50/50 thing. You cant trust financial companies. Alwayds stay on top of everything. Even open accounts. Good luck!
