I did order CR's from all 3 via annualcreditreport.com and they are very similar. I can easily compare the reports with his TC report as well, and they generate FAKO's for all three which are all within 20 points of each other (useless, but interesting nonetheless).

the myfico simulator estimate he will get a 50-100 point increase just by getting a $300 limit card, but if it's secured will it be worth less in the scoring model?

not to my knowledge chic. to the CRA's, a cc is a cc is a cc. Maybe someone with more knowledge, will chime in. But I believe that's correct. The important thing is for him to get a card and start building a history on that card. And for goodness sakes, tell him never, ever be late on paying it. The lates are like a big boat anchor in dragging the score down. Hope that helps

thanks gang. i think i will suggest that he apply with BoA online tonight. I applied with them and got offered a dollar for dollar secured card, and my scores suck, so hopefully he'll get the 99/500. appreciate all the good advice!

chic, please know that 99/500 card is not in their product offering. It is a counter-offer card, if you are denied a card in their offer.

If you want to go that route, I suggest he applies for BoA's Visa Platinum Plus card. If he's denied he will be taken to a screen that says denied. BUT... it is there they will make a counter offer, on the same page. The proper title to the card: Partial Secure Visa Platinum.

I'm referring to online offers only. Pls keep that in mind.
