Now, I know you insert the card in the slot at bottom, but do you guys automatically insert the card in the slot at first no matter what OR you slide it first like typically done and then inserted into the slot if you are prompted? If the card reader has a slot to insert the card are they automatically enabled or turned on or it is up to the store/card processing company to activate it?

Here in Hawaii, only about half of the card swipers have a slot for a chipped credit card. Of that 50%, only half of that are programmed to be able to utilize that function. So... i don't even bother.
Swiping the card first, then inserting, if prompted, is an ok approach. However, for better security, don't use the swiper at all. Insert only. The chip won't share your credit number with the merchant, which instead gets a unique token for the transaction. Regardless, the cardholder is protected either way from fraudulent use.
EMV allows for various levels of fallback and security configurations, which is largely dependent on the card issuer (ie. chip and pin verses chip and signature), but also to some extent by the merchant. In the U.S., the security policy for EMV will likely be lax, allowing for swiper use as a fallback. In the distant future, this won't be much of an issue. However, during the long transition period, it could be. Fraudsters can potentially clone cards from merchants that haven't implemented EMV, and then use them at EMV terminals that are configured to fallback to magstrip for cards experiencing EMV problems / lacking EMV chip.

There's no reason to swipe first. If the merchant has EMV enabled on their terminals I use the slot.

Having an EMV terminal doesn't necessarily mean that the merchant has enabled EMV support. Similarly, having an NFC capable terminal doesn't mean that the merchant has enabled NFC.
The first time I used a chip was a few weeks ago at Target.
How I found out is that I tried swiping as usual but it did not work.
The cashier said it is a chip enabled terminal, slide the card (chip facing up) and leave it in there, when the screen says to remove or it's done, then you remove.
That's it.
So now I know I just slip the card into the terminal and follow the instructions on the terminal (no swiping needed!).
Easy as 1-2-3.

I've only seen one place yet with the new EMV POS terminals; was a conversation piece with the cashier heh.
