BTW, if you have firefox, you can fix the "widescreen" problem by checking the box that says Automatically convert carriage returns to HTML or something like that.

Will do. Thanks for the tip.

Re: How do you conduct the initial phone conversation with a CA

Hey Felix,

I got a call from a collection agency. It was for an account that my wife never paid. I told them it was her responsibility. They never sent me anything in the mail. They put it on my credit report a couple months later. Apparently they sent letters to my ex wife (we've been divorced over 4 years). I have been trying to get it off since then. I have tried to DV, offer them a PFD, tried to offer the OC payment in full if they could remove it. I'm not sure how I can get this off my report, and it's my only collection so I'm sure it's killing my scores. Currently I have a dispute with the CRA's (sent it to them 3/6/2008) since they never returned the DV. We'll see what happens, but long story short, it's still on there.

So, to those who say do not ever talk to a collection agency, that may not be the best advice. If I had it to do over again, I would have called them and asked them for their address, then sent them a letter CMRRR. In it I'd write that they claim that I owe them a debt, and that they called me on date xx/xx/xxxx, but that I have received nothing from them in writing and that I need validation of this alleged debt, and that all future correspondence from them should be in writing to the address provided in the letter. I know that people say never give a collection agency any information, but once something is on your credit report I've learned it's not simple to get it off.

This is just what I would do if I had it to do over again and know what I know now. I did not think something could be put on my credit report without me ever receiving a letter. Also, it depends on if you have the means to pay something off and how much you care about your credit. If they have your phone number and are sending things to another mailing address, then I'd guess that they are going to put it on your credit report.

By the way, if anyone has any advice how I can get this off my credit report, I'm all ears. If the CRA's do take it off, I'll post back.

Hi TTGIRN. So, the only reason why you would talk to the CA is to get their address, right?

TTGIRN SAYS--"So, to those who say do not ever talk to a collection agency, that may not be the best advice. If I had it to do over again, I would have called them and asked them for their address, then sent them a letter CMRRR."

You can accomplish the exact same thing via google. There is no need to open up that can of worms with them. They lie, cheat, say whatever, do whatever to entrap you.

Re: How do you conduct the initial phone conversation with a CA

Hey trying

If they are reporting it on your CR, aren't they required to list a valid address on your report so that you can contact them? if they didn't respond to your DV, shouldn't it be automatically deleted?

To offer a different perspective, Allied Interstate sent me a letter offering to PFD for half the amount owed, I noticed they didn't include a payment envelope as most CAs do so I called them up to try to get an address.

The guy was very rude and condescending..........he refused to give me a mailing address and wanted me to pay over the phone (I WILL NEVER GIVE A CA MY BANKING INFO).....but not only that, he completely contradicted everything in the letter saying that the OC WOULD report me as PIF if I only paid them the settlement amount, and that the only way to get a full Delete was to pay them (the CA)the entire amount ( I knew this was a lie because the OC wasn't even listed on my CR)

The a few days latter he called me screaming and saying that "his office sent out that letter and that he had the power to revoke that offer at any time and that he had RECORDED our previous conversation" trying to convince me that whatever we discussed over the phone that day had basically invalidated the letter they wrote me.

At this point I felt so stupid, if I had just stuck to communicating with them via mail they would have been legally bound by the letter they sent me

Re: How do you conduct the initial phone conversation with a CA

I sent off a demand to delete letter to the CRA's (along with copies of the returned letter, green card, etc.). The next day, the CA called me and told me that they had new information to give me and that it looked like I was disputing the account. I don't know how the CRA got ahold of the CA when I couldn't, but they did somehow. I did not (and will not) call the CA back. Hopefully the CRA's will remove this from my credit report. I'll post back if they do.

Re: How do you conduct the initial phone conversation with a CA

I just got a letter from TransUnion today saying that they have concluded their investigation and that the item remains. What to do next? I had sent a DV to the letter they have listed for the CA and it was returned as undeliverable. They still have that same address listed. I thought they had to have a valid address listed.

So, anyone have any advice for this? I thought that since the DV I sent CMRRR to the CA was returned as undeliverable, the CRAs would have to delete, but it's looking like that's not the case?

Not yet. I guess that's the next step then? Anyone have a good MOV letter handy? If not, I'll search for one.
