How do you find where CA is licensed

How do you find out if a Collection Company is licensed in your state. Can they be license in the state you owe the money only or do they have to be licensed in your state as well.

IF (note the IF) your state requires a license then they must be licensed by your state to try to collect from you. Not all states require a license.

Most states have a licensing search online - google "debt collector license (your state)" and start ploughing thru the pages until you find a search for a licensee...
