How does the owner of a collection show up on a report?

Does it show the collection agency as the owner or the original creditor? For example, I have a paid collection on my report that I am looking to delete.

The information states: AMEX, PO Box 297812, Ft Lauderdale, FL - Paid, closed, collection account. There is no other identifying information.

Does this mean that AMEX owns it or a collection agency listed it (even though I never paid a CA for it)?

If AMEX owns it, I was thinking of sending them a GW letter. Anyone had any luck with AMEX and GW letters?

Amex does not sell their debt-

May want to try AMEX's Optima program. Search for the Optima phone numbers.
