How to go about dealing with medical debts in collection?

I'm so sorry if this is something I should have been able to gather by reading through the forum. However, I couldn't find any posting that seemed to be generalizable to my situation.

Here's my situation: I have around five separate collections for $125.00 each for local urgent care type places. These are my debts, fair and square. I gathered them from 2002-2006. The collection agency is either local, or has a branch in my area. I also have a cell phone, gas bill and electric bill collection due to my mother closing the accounts a few years after I moved away from home (the bills were in my name once I hit 18 since my mother had really poor credit). The cell phone and utility collections are from around 2002-2004.

Point being, do I have a shot at GW the medical bills? Can I attempt to make some sort of arrangement like "You remove the negative status from the CRAs, and I will pay X dollars a month till they are paid off?" I'm a student, so I could not afford to pay them all off at once. For the cell phone and utility bills... Do I have any sort of chance at PFD(ing) them?

Thank you all very much. I've learned a lot reading these forums. I was under the assumption that I would have to wait for them to fall off my CR. I really want to make some sort of effort to repair my credit, but this whole GW/PFD concept has completely blown my mind, to be honest.

It's called a PFD...pay for delete letter...some insist you deal with them by mail only...no phone calls...some will agree...some will not...that's when you DV...then if it's verified...GW them....or maybe you should DV them first s they could prove it's yours...even though you might no its your...they might not have proper verification...so they will have to delete....

If this post is in violation of the TOS, please accept my apologies and promptly delete it. I am not trying to evade paying what I owe, I just want to do so in a way that is most beneficial to my FICO cause. Smiley Happy

I truly want to become a responsible debtor. Funny thing is, is that I manage the DH's credit, which was a clean slate when we began our relationship. After two years, his TU/EXP FICOs are 688! I want to be proud of my score, too.

P.S. I am so happy and relieved to find other people who are obsessed with their credit. I was starting to feel a little bit odd.

Re: How to go about dealing with medical debts in collection?

My advice with PFDs is, "there's nothing to lose by trying." With one critical caveat: if you're within the SOL, a PFD request may be interpreted by the CA as "Gee, this person has money right now, let's sue them." Given the low balances in your case, that's unlikely, but the probability is greater than zero.

I would see what SOL is in your state, and make sure you're beyond it. Once you're outside SOL, you really have nothing to lose by offering a PFD. The catch in your case is that you have to be ready to pay the whole enchilada at once--generally CAs won't accept installments on a PFD...and what's worse, paying in installments may reset both the SOL and DOFD! Never offer to pay a CA in installments--either settle the whole thing or ignore the collection entirely.

Athena,
I tried the same thing just about two months ago! While it didn't work exactly, you can definitely try.

The compromise I came to with the CA was this:
I would pay XX dollars a  month, and they would start applying them to the smallest balance first. As each one got paid off they would delete it from my CR.

Then last month, I just paid it all off in full & that was that...

When you approach the CA about it, you may want to have the OC already on board. Try calling the OC first and explain to them what you'd like to try & see if they'll be willing. I say this because at least in my case, the CA needed the OC's permission before they could delete anyway.

Ah! I see said the blind man. Smiley Happy

Yeah, I was wondering about the installment thing... I figured it might be okay if I got them to agree to remove the negative statement first, but I wasn't sure. I need to read up on the SOL.

I was NOT AT ALL...trying to make you NOT RESPONSIBLE...for what you owe...I don't understand what I said that makes you feel that way...that's under any circumstances...if they can't prove the debt is your when you GW...or PFD...they will remove it anyway...WILL YOU THEM CALL THEM AND INSIST THEY ACCEPT PAYMENT BECAUSE YOU KNOW YOU OWE THEM????????? If that's the case pay it all and all will update as paid in full....

Oh! Since I have multiple collections with one agency, if I pay off on an older one, does that trigger the SOL for the other, newer ones?

No, no, no, Slyhouse! I'm sorry. I was typing that at the same time you were typing yours. After I posted the original post, I actually read the TOS and warning bells went off. Honestly, it nothing to do with what you said. It was a proactive attempt to appease moderators. My apologies.
