How to prove DOLA or DOFD...

I'm confused.  Does a negative entry on my report stay for 7 years after DOLA or DOFD?

I have several entries on my CR from a Ch 7 BK in 2002.  Two of the accounts are showing a DOLA after my BK discharge.  Both accounts are with Capital One and I would like to know when they are scheduled to come off.

Who should I dispute it with first (the bureaus or Cap One), or should I dispute at all?  I really can't prove when the DOFD (or the DOLA for that matter!) was...i've moved several times and no longer have those records.

Help!

It's seven years from DOFD, not DOLA! Call the CRAs and ask them when you first defaulted with these accounts, this is usually 180 days late. Anything that is reporting inaccurately and is adversely effecting your scores, should be disputed with the CRAs. Check out these threads.

Re: How to prove DOLA or DOFD...

OK, here's more news...

I just received an updated copy of my TU report.  My 4 Cap One accounts (which were all discharged in my 5/02 BK) have been "updated" to show the DOFD as 5/02 and now the "estimated date that this item will be removed" has been changed from 4/2008 to 4/2009!  How can they just add on another year of reporting??  There has been no activity on the account since 2001.  I'm pretty sure I became 180+ in mid 2001 and never made another payment.  I filed for my Ch 7 BK in 1/02 and it was discharged in 5/02.

I called Cap One and was told by Lisa in the Recovery Department that 5/02 was the correct reporting for my DOFD.  How can that be?  She said since it was a BK account, that's how they do it.  I asked for her supervisor and was given a fax # to send my dispute directly to the credit reporting department.  I faxed over my TU report from 7/07 which showed the date of removal as 4/08, my TU report from 9/08 which showed the date of removal as 4/09, and a copy of Section 605 of the FCRA.

Any thoughts on what my plan of defense should be?  Will it really give me that many points on such old accounts if they are deleted?
