Four days ago, I woke up to alerts from CapOne saying my card was over the limit with possible fraudulent charges. I logged into my app and, sure enough, there were multiple Apple charges I didn't make ranging from $10 to $215, for a total of just over $800. My true balance at the time was $285/$1100.
I filled out the report and flagged all the charges I didn't make. Slowly over the course of the last few days, they credited my account for each charge. They also canceled that card and sent me a new one. I haven't received it yet.
This morning, I woke up to multiple CSM alerts. CapOne updated to the CB's with a balance of $1300+/$1100, absolutely tanking my already crummy scores. For reference, my account closes on the 10th and generally reports to the CB's around the 16th. I get that they report when the account is closed, but dang, at least wait until I'm credited the charges I didn't make!
myFICO hasn't updated yet so I can only see the damage it's caused on Vantage scoring models. I promptly paid my true balance down to zero and when it updates, likely tomorrow, I will be calling and requesting a mid-cycle update. DP's indicate I may or may not be successful, so wish me luck!
Interesting. I contacted Citi one hour after receiving a text notification of a couple on-line charges at places I never heard of. I mentioned they were fraudulent and asked the card be cancelled and a new card issued.
Just received my replacement card today. I'll need to check my account but I was told the charges would not show on my statement. Perhaps it is a matter of timing.
Are you set-up to receive text notifications for on-line charges where card is not present? I have that plus notification if any charge is over x amount or cumulative charges on card are over y dollars.
Did you put a freeze on your cra reports or add a fraud alert?

It happened in the middle of the night while I was sleeping. I haven't put a freeze on my CRA reports, but I did change every imaginable password I have. I had gotten 3 myFICO alerts the day before about Black Market Surveillance. I should have acted on it, but I blew it off.
Sorry to hear that happened. Since its not the tenth yet, they shouldn't have reported anyway.
I don't suppose it would prevent this particular fraud, but I keep all three reports frozen. You do have to set up an account with all three bureaus, but it's not that hard. When you want to apply somewhere, you can schedule a temporary thaw that automatically refreezes. If you know which they pull, only thaw the one.
A charge that is posted to a card will remain until the dispute is resolved. So, even though you are not obligated to pay disputed charge(s) they are included in the total balance. In the OP's case unresolved charges would still be included in a statement balance.
Sorry that happened. I don't blame you for being mad.
I never before saw the phrase "throat punch" but I get your meaning
The throat punch reminds me of a radio show host's story.
As a teenager he and his brother went to see some llamas close up in person. While he was walking, one of the llamas started following him at a 3 foot distance. After a short time the llama leaned forward grabbing his hair in its mouth and jerked his head backward.
The older brother, being nearby, quickly sprinted over and throat punched the llama as hard as he could. The startled llama opened its mouth releasing the hair. It then started spitting and making loud noises.
I've seen quite a few llamas - rather large with long necks. They tend to strut around with an attitude. A throat punch won't injure one but would cause some pain and make it think twice about repeating bad behavior.

The weird thing is, my card doesn't close until the 10th. I'm hoping the will re-report at statement closing with the correct balance. All fraudulent charges have been removed and I have the card paid down to $10. This is my card I use for a balance with AZEO.
Here are a few more odd DP's to add:
-CK shows the over the limit balance on both TU and EQ with a 27-29 point VS3.0 score loss
-myFICO shows the over the limit balance on EQ only with a 27 point FICO8 score loss
-MyExperian is not showing the over the limit balance, but did experience a 4 point FICO8 gain with the only change being my installment loan (auto) going from 37% paid off to 53% paid off. I found this odd because I thought the only installment loan threshold was under 9%, but the rules may be different for a dirty scorecard?
-My daughter is an AU on this card. I obviously can't use mine since it's been closed. Once I paid the balance to $0, it updated to $300 available credit. It appears that since her card number wasn't compromised, her card is still active, but they are only allowing her to use $300/$1100. I realized this was my AZEO card, so I had her put $10 in gas in her car on that card and it worked just fine. Capone now shows $290 available. I got the email my card has been mailed and will arrive on the 13th. I'm guessing once I activate my new card, her AU card will either no longer work, or will now be associated with my new card.
I hope that all made sense!
Everything should transfer over to the new card, including the AU association. Report back once everything has settled.
