So some one got hold of my SS# and (for the 2nd time in 5 years) opened cell phone accts and defaulted - in my name. My credit score dropped 30 points and I'm in the process of buying a house so BAAAAD timing. I cleared it up with t-mobile - I was aggressive with them and they removed everything negative from my credit reports within a couple weeks and my credit score jumped 68 points! Not really sure how that happened but I'm not complaining.
I have since initiated a 7 year fraud alert since it appears my SS# is floating around out there. Pretty scary but I will keep a very close eye on my credit.
So there is the possibility to recover from identity theft quickly - just stay on the creditors and don't leave them alone until the problems are fixed. I went to the executive offices of t-mobile (emailed and called) - that did the trick.
Congrats on having the issue cleared up completely!
I wanted to point out that it is not surprising that your scores recovered so fast. Your Fico score is a snapshot in time. Meaning that once something is removed the scoring formula has no idea it was ever there (i.e. the formula has no memory)
Good luck with your home purchase!
Cheers
