Identity Theft Security Freeze Question

All 3 credit reporting agencies offer my state a security freeze/lift for free with proof of identity theft/police report.  However, I was wondering on how long you get it for free?  Is it lifetime or is there a time limit?

A security freeze is indefinite...I've had mine frozen for years.

Any advice given is always YMMV...

I understand that the freeze itself is indefinite but every state charges consumers a set price (approximately $11) to either freeze or unfreeze their credit report.  Victims of identity theft can have those fees waived with a police report/FTC report.  My question is how long are the fees waived for so that you can freeze/unfreeze for $0??

Re: Identity Theft Security Freeze Question

Unfortunately, you are referring to a fraud alert. Fraud alert entitles you to view your report twice in a 12 month period. In regard to security freezes, my answer still stands but you should check each Bureau in regards to fees where you live. I know you probably know this but you'll be provided the PIN number and that's what you use.

Any advice given is always YMMV...

Re: Identity Theft Security Freeze Question

After reading the information from all three credit bureaus below, my question still stands:  how many times can I freeze/unfreeze my credit report for free???

http://www.experian.com/consumer/help/states/tx.html
The fee for placing a security freeze on a credit report is $10.83 (includes tax). If you are a victim of identity theft and submit a valid investigative or incident report, complaint with a law enforcement agency or the Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV), the fee will be waived.

https://help.equifax.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/75/search/1

If you are a victim of identity theft and you submit or have previously submitted a copy of a valid police report, investigative report, or complaint made under Section 32.51, Penal Code, no fees will be charged to place a security freeze on your Equifax credit file, temporarily lift the security freeze for a specific party or specific period of time, to permanently remove the security freeze from your Equifax credit file, or for a replacement 10 digit PIN.
