Does anyone have experience with identyt theft? Someone opened an account in my name in 2004 with bank of america and now a company called Asset Acceptance is reporting on my credit reports. I did not authorize this account. I have filed a police report, sent an affidavit from the Federal Trade Commission with a dispute letter to all 3 credit bureaus. I have not checked my credit in years and recently understood the importance of monitoring your credit. If anyone has experience with identity theft please share your experience and resolution outcome.
What you provided was correct, but filing as a dispute was not the proper process.
If you have a police (identity theft) report, along with an FTC affidavit affirming it was not authorized by you, then you would simply send them to the CRA as a request under FCRA 605B , which requires the CRA to immediately block it from your credit report. It is not treated as a dispute, and their is no referral to the furnisher, no investigation by them, and no reinestigation by the CRA as a dispute. It is covered as a CR blocking request under section 605B.
Hopefully, the CRA will properly just implement the block, and not treat under the dispute process.
