In Desparate Need of Advice

Hello everyone,

I'm new to this board and excited that I may have finally found a resource center to get me on the right financial track.

I'm stuck in a pretty big debt rut and would love some advice as to how I can get out of it. I am currently in graduate school and have racked up a lot of credit card debt (prior to and during school). I would like to get my fico scores up as well as get a good chuck of the debt paid off within the next year before i graduate and lots of student loans kick in. My biggest problem is that I'm not able to pay much more than the minimums on the credit cards.

The breakdown is as follows:
bal/avail/%
1. 11012/14000/24.65
2. 3517/4000/26.99
3. 1150/3000/24.44
4. 1413/1600/28

My current TU score is 645, and when I check all three a few months ago the TU was the lowest if the three.

Start with the highest int. card...pay when it first appears on new bill.   Min pmt
work your way down.........before due date pay as much extra as you can.

When paying as soon as new bill appears you are cutting intrest for the next month. Int. is added
everyday not every month.

FICO  645   nothing to sneeze at

Call the companies and see if they will lower your interest rates.

It's worth a shot, especially if you have been with them awhile/been a good customer.

Re: In Desparate Need of Advice

Thanks for your responses. I am working part-time (as many hours as I can) and am pretty much just getting by. I am attempting to up my monthly income, but for the time-being it is what it is. I am curious if consolidating my credit card debt would be helpful. I am not sure if I would be able to get a traditional debt consolidation personal loan as my DTI ratio is very high (because of only working part-time). A couple months ago I was denied an amazon.com credit card due to high balances, so I think a large bank loan is out of the question. However, I have been looking at the site Prosper.com and was considering applying for a $17000 loan at 19% APR. With this loan, I'd have the debt paid off in 36 months. If I snowball at the current rates, I'll have it paid off in 46 months. Obviously the prosper loan would save me money in interest. But, my main question is, how would taking on that loan affect my fico score? Thanks in advance for your help.

Re: In Desparate Need of Advice

Hiya Greenpea,
That is almost THE EXACT same situation I was in about 5 years ago...what a nightmare that was!
There are really very few things you can do to correct your situation; here they are as I did them:
1) stop spending money. Seriously, you just have to completely stop. You are a grad student; nobody expects you to buy them expensive dinners out or pay for a round of shots at the local pub. Buy the bag of Starbucks coffee at the local grocery store ($0.20 instead of the $5/cup at the retailer. Take advantage of your current situation and everyone else's expectations of you now, while you still have a chance. Stop spending money. Think to yourself, if I open my wallet I am doing something wrong. Stop. Close it. And if you don't die of starvation, exposure to the elements, or dehydration, then you'll be just fine. Think like this for just 12 months, and you'll be rewarded for the next 10 years.
2) Make more money. I don't care what you have to do, just find a way to make more money. 2nd job, 3rd job, shovel snow, or rake leaves. Start a web site and sell advice to incoming college freshmen on their chemistry classes. Do whatever it takes. You simply need to increase your income.
3) Buy a house/condo/apt. With the tax benefits available for home owners, and the government subsidies available for first time buyers, you can easily reduce your overall output buy paying less money into your taxes. You won't get too far with a 646 score, though...the interest rates could kill you. You need to increase your score to over 700...720 would be best. take a look at this web site for information how to increase your score:[deleted]
Just stick with it...with persistance and patience you will acheive freedom from the load that has been accumulating on your shoulders. Good luck.

The slide from grace is really more like gliding
And I've found the trick is not to stop the sliding
But to find a graceful way of staying slid

Yes and the link should be getting removed.  It's his/her first post, which was pretty good overall... we all make mistakes.  Especially when we don't read the TOS (who really does?)  Smiley Wink
