Is it legally binding...

I had a bill from a utilities company that went into collection.  I didn't know about it until it showed up on my credit report - the final bill was not sent to my new address.  I wrote them out a check for the balance.  I also wrote on the back of the check "By chashing this check, you acknowledge a billing mistake and will update all credit agencies, removing anything negative on my account" (or something like that).

A check is an agreement - right?  So are they legally obligated to remove negative items from my account?
