Hey everyone,
I have a questions regarding the risk v. reward of disputing a CO on my report.
The DOFD on the CO is 12/03, so from my calculation it is due to fall off in 6/11. What happened was I went on vacation and when the hotel clerk swiped my CC, he said it didn't go through, so I gave him another card he said that didn't go through, and finally the third card (he said) went through, which was a debit card. Well, a week later I get home to find out ALL the charges went through... $633 on each card. I contact Chase and get the 1st swipe taken off through a dispute. I had no problem with the debit card one, as that was the actual payment. But, the third card was a Providian card (now owned by Chase). They refused to take the charge off, even after disputing, having them contact the hotel, and providing them with a bank statement showing I paid the actual invoice via an alternative method. I paid off my whole Providian balance, but that CO and continued to fight it. Eventually they charged off the remaining balance and here I stand.
I am going to be purchasing a new home soon and want to know if it is worth trying to fight it again? My current EQ score is 700, TU is 678, and I got it removed from EXP. Other factors - I have a current open Chase Freedom card with high utilization, and I know that they own providian cards now (it shows up on my CR as Chase now).
My Questions:
1. At this point (over 6 years in the past), how much is this CO affecting my score. I don't have any other major derogs... only other minor derogs are 3, 30 day late payments in 2005.
2. Is it worth hiring a lawyer?
3. Could it in any way jeopardize my current Chase Freedom card that I love and a very high limit ($9500)?
Mortgage lenders do not like seeing active disputes on your credit reports. If you are really going to buy a house soon, then disputing could make that very difficult.
Since the CO is comparatively old, then the impact it's having on your score is probably small. When I got a mortgage in February 2006, there was a CO from July 2001. It didn't hinder my application or approval at all.
I agree with Lel. The CO will be gone in 15 months. I would not dispute something so old.
