In OP's case though, I don't see how an SD'd card for 2 years could have been used. Especially if he removed it from Walmart.com, although I'm sure the numbers were still stored in a server somewhere. That seems like it would be a Walmart breach issue though, not Cap1 or SYNCH? Or at least the company that Walmart uses to store said information.

I didn't think of it like that completly. That may be it.

I just thought it was weird and some others that I talked to that the card did not change account numbers at all, which seems normal for a change over.

Others I spoke with seem to have also not gotten new numbers at all which the transisition.

Anyway, with it being the same number all around, it seems difficult to pin down the fault to any particular company as any of them could have been breached to cause the issue technically.

Luckily, none of my other open accounts like Chase, FNBO, Comenity, & other Synchs seem to have any fraud on them at all, but obviously I am keeping a very close eye on them.

I still like how I did all the work I possibly could to keep my active cards safe (checking for suspicious devices on ATMs, POS devices, overcharges, multiple charges for a single purchage, etc) and here it's SD ones that get attacked. Smiley Indifferent

Charges to the old account numbers were not being declined. In fact people were told to keep using their Sync card until they got their new Capital One card and it wouldn't surprise me if Capital One has both cards active for customer's benefit. I know that when Capital One sends me replacement cards, my old one works even after I have activated the new one.

Yes, that part I understand. I used mine right up until the new cards came, then I shredded the old ones. I also though that I read in that letter that the old card would cease to function upon activation of said new ones, but definitely 2-4 weeks after the new ones arrived?

There are more reports about Sync cards that haven't been used online or taken out of safes/SD being used for fraud so again, I suspect it's a Sync issue somewhere.

Re: Is there a such thing as accidental fraud charges?

DW and I have had more trouble with C1 than any one else.   They are good  getting abouting catching the charges but.   DW and our biz C1 have been hacked.   We figure it was on line  purchase.   Chase    card was hacked this summer also .   Most of the attempted purchases involve Amazon.  It has gotten to the point any Amazon purchases will be made with a virtual one use card number.   Our computers due to our government contracts have military grade anti malware and anti virus so  we sure its not on our end.

Well so far, that charge is still pending.

Not sure if it's just naturally pending or it's because I caught it within minutes.

CS made it sound like it was going to post and then an automatic refund would apply.

Strangely I no longer have the pending charge at all nor did it post, but I still don't have that $600 as Available Credit.

Re: Is there a such thing as accidental fraud charges?

Well this is fun......

Just got an email alert from Capital One that somebody now tried the card at "Stop & Shop" but the email was like "Stop & Shop needs your new card as they tried to use your old" instead of an actual fraud alert.

fun indeedSmiley Frustrated

Like I said upthread, watch, take screenshots cuz with ds...those charges kept popping up.  3 additional even after the card was closed, new acct number.

eta:  the screenshots is just to keep the timeline straight in your memory/mind....cuz it can get jumbled with a lot going on and further down the road you have good notes.

Re: Is there a such thing as accidental fraud charges?

Small Update:

The original $600 charge never got out of the pending stage, so I am at least back to 100% of my CL even though the card is SDed.
