Is this normal for them to require (experian)

I just got a reply back when trying to get verification of some stuff on my credit report and they said the following:

We were unable to honor your recent request because you did not provide sufficient identification for us to verify your identity. Please read the info below.

The FCRA states "A consumer credit reporting company shall require as a condition of disclosure that the consumer furnish proper identification;" therefore, if you write to us, we must require all of the following information in order to process your requests: Full name, including middle name; current mailing address; social security number; date of birth; and complete address for the past two years. In addition, enclose one copy of a government issued idenification card, such as a drivers lisence, state or military id card, etc, AND one copy of a utility bill, bank or insurance statement, etc. Make sure copies are legible.

Okay I don't feel comfortable sending this sort of stuff expecially copies of my DL in the mail when it could be lost. Is this really legal?

Yes- it is legal for them to require proof of identity and quite normal.

If you send CMRRR, you can track and make sure it arrives where it should.

If you don't feel comfortable sending via mail, get a fax number and fax the required information.

Re: Is this normal for them to require (experian)

Last time I sent a dispute letter, I enclosed a copy of my social security card and drivers license. Everything went smooth and they didn't complain. So I suggest automatically sending copies of those two documents to the CRAs when disputing something.

And you shouldn't feel uncomfortable about mailing the CRAs this information... they already have it. You are verifying it, not giving them something they don't already have.

what about the copy of a utility bill? I am not sure what I would have to give them because my husband has the utilities in his name.

You have a bank or insurance statement that has your name on it?

That's generally so that they can verify your current address. As sidewinder said, you might see if they would accept something else with your name and your address on it. I'd call and ask.
