Keep sending PFD letters?

I have three collection accounts on my credit reports.  They are valid charges (all medical bills) and one has was reported in 2005 and the other two were reported in 2006.  I haven't heard from the collection agency in quite some time but after pulling my credit reports, I sent them a PFD letter.  They totally ignored it and sent me a very demanding, nasty collection bill instead!  So, my question is, should I try sending another PFD letter or just go ahead and pay the collections?

Thanks!

Re: Keep sending PFD letters?

I don't know about sending more PFDs (unfortunately I had heard of that option before paying my last collection) but if you do end up paying, I'd still try to negotiate a lower payment.

Are they past SOL?

You still have the option of DV if within your 30days unless you are in a state that allows it at any time.

Have you tried talking to the OC and doing PFD with them?

Hmm... No, I haven't tried contacting the OC.  I guess I could try that and see what happens.  If they say no as well, should I go ahead and pay the collections?  Does it reflect more favorably if the collections are at least paid?

I have been told no, a collection is a collection---paid or unpaid-- when it comes to your credit score. Others are saying that they received a small increase when paying. So I guess it is debatable.

On the credit scoring 101 thread it just says:

-35% affects Payment History. Meaning any lates; collections; charge offs; bankruptcies; judgments; liens or the such will hurt the score. All is time based, the older the information the less it is contributing to the scores.

However, during a manual review, paid collections definitely look better.

Call the OC and find out if they sold the account or assigned the account to the CA. If the OC can pull it back and allow you to pay and then instruct the CA to delete. Explain your situation and how nasty the CA was.

Excellent advice!  I appreciate your help.  I'll try that and see how it goes.  I guess if nothing else, I won't have them hounding me anymore!

Re: Keep sending PFD letters?

eyeread, I've been posting this response for the past 3 days now. And it appears that it applies to your case...if you've seen it, my apologies. But here's my story:.......

Firstly you need to determine who actually owns the accounts. Hopefully the OC does. If that's the case you are in a very strong negotiating position.

And if that's the case, deal ONLY with the OC. Offer to PFD and pif.
Med collections, imo are the easiest collections to be removed.

I posted this 3 days ago to spain, who had similar case to yours. Here's my response to him. It's long so bear with me:

Hi spain246, and welcome to the forum! There's a wealth of information here, and many knowledgeable people to help you get credit healthy.

The answer is.....NO! Do NOT call the collection agency! When you need to correspond with them ONLY do it in writing. Do NOT commit to anything until you totally and perfectly understand your position.

Let me repost a reply I made yesterday in regards to a med collection. Please bear with me:..........................

I was successful in getting 3 med collections removed from my CR's back in October, 2007 by negotiating with the hospital(it was for 3 ER visits for my daughter).

This worked for me, and here's my story. Please bear with me:

In September I pulled all 3 CR's from freecreditreport.com. They showed 3 med collections. I called the CA(yes this is a no no...I know that now), and after looking up my account, I told them that I would pay in full IF and ONLY IF they would delete the entire entry from my CR. They said they'd gladly accept my pif, and would mark the account as PAID. I said not good enough. I don't want it marked PAID, I want it deleted. They told me the only way that can happen is if the hospital instructs them to do so. I said fine and hung up.

I THEN called the hospital, and after 5 minutes of looking up my account, they told me what I owed. I said I would pay in full with a cashier's check, and hand deliver it to them tomorrow, IF and ONLY IF they will instruct the CA to delete the entire entry from my CR.

The CSR who I talked to said she'd have to talk to head of her department at the hospital. I said fine. Call me tomorrow with your answer. She did. YAY! I then said, as a further condition of paying in full IMMEDIATELY, I would like an original duplicate, on hospital letterhead, the letter of instructions to the CA instructing them to delete the entire record from my CR. She agreed.

The next day I took a cashiers check to the hospital, and asked for the letter(for review). She gave it to me...it looked perfect....I then handed my cashier's check to the CSR.

2 weeks later I received a letter from the CA notifying me they have deleted the files from my CR's. The next time I pulled my CR's they were all gone.

Sorry to be so long winded. But hope that helps.

Re: Keep sending PFD letters?

Wow!  Great leg work on your part.  I guess it pays to go the extra mile.  I just looked up the number for the hospital in which the collections are due so I'm going to give them a call in just a bit.  Keep your fingers crossed they still own the account!

Re: Keep sending PFD letters?

Update!!!

Just wanted to let everyone know that I got a response to my PFD letter for one of my collection issues and they said they would delete it from all three credit reports!  Hooray!!!  I sent the certified check for the balance this morning so I'll anxiously be waiting for that one to fall off.  Now, I only have two more to go.  I'm very optimistic about the other two because they are with the same collection company.  So, if they accepted a PFD for one, there is a good chance they will for the other two right?  I have the money to pay off one for sure but will have to wait a little while on the last one.  I can't wait for these to disappear from my reports and for my score to go up!

I wanted to say thank you for everyone who gave advice and encouragment.  I'm so glad I was directed to this website.  I've already increased my score by 83 points and I'm not loosing any steam now.  Smiley Very Happy
