Hey folks,
I would appreciate if someone can help out answering this. I hve an old debt with Macys (5 yrs old, beyond SOL). I contacted them in order to get a pay for delete agreement & told them i am recording the call. They informed me they are no longer collecting that debt and they are going to send me a letter stating that. Can that letter be used to remove the account from my credit report? They said it is illegal for them to collect the debt at this point (although they update my credit report every single month!) - does that make sense?
Thanks in advance!
There are two reasons that would result in their current inability to pursue the debt.
First is that they have sold the debt, and second is that they have formally cancelled the debt.
In either event, they are required to update their reporting to now show a $0 balance on the account, but are not required to delete otherwise accurate account history information.
Thanks Robert for the prompt response. They reported the full amount owed almost every month the credit bureaus [the status in my credit report says charge off 02/2016 but the balance is not 0$].
