I haven't done anything credit related since closing on our home in November 2010 including any monitoring or pulling my yearly credit reports. I probably should have pulled them again in 2011 but so many other things going on that the time flew.
I decided to pull all three free reports this month to see how things are going and I saw 2 issues I need to get addressed still. The first is I need to contact a CA who was suppose to do a PFD on an account and they did remove the account from 2 of the 3 reports. The second is the more tricky issue I believe.
My father and I share a name and while it's slowed down considerably I still occasionally get a phone call or letter regarding his past dues.
So the goal I'm wanting to accomplish is to get all three CRAs to report my correct current address (only one does, one reports an address that is about 4 years old and another about 8 years), remove his address as being as one of my previous, as I never lived there and to get some of the incorrect previous addresses removed that are erroneous entries I suspect (bad addresses that the correct ones are already listed such as correct stress address was suppose to be 101 and it has 25 or something). I'm more concerned about getting my address correct and his removed than to fix the erroneous ones but might as well try to get it all fixed at once.
Anywhere to start looking for help? I've tried to search on my own in the past but I got no where.
Usually, the addresses included on your report are addresses the CRAs were able to verify from information provided by your creditors. Whatever address they are reporting the CRAs for your account is what ends up on your report. So, best place to start is make sure all creditors have the correct mailing address on file. Next, prior addresses really don't mean anything, so having an address removed is pointless.
If after making sure you have updated with all your creditors, allow time for them to update, and it is still wrong... contact each CRA by Phone (not electronically), and let them know the issue. You usually will have to send them proof of your identity and a utility bill confirming the correct address.
When you pull your reports directly from the CRA there is usually a reference code of some type on each of the listed addresses. If you follow down to the accounts you can see which account is reporting each address. If there is no longer an associated account it is easy to have the CRA remove the address by phone. If there is still an active account with that address it will reappear on the next reporting from the creditor.
The easy way to get your current address reporting is to update your address with your current creditors. Most of them you can do it on-line. Just be aware that it may cause some of them to do a mid cycle / immediate update to the CRA's. So if you are carrying a balance on a credit card it may report the new balance info. It will change at the next regular report cycle if you generally PIF before the statement date.
I had the same issue - they were reporting work addresses on my reports as my corp Amex used to come to my work address. I went online to all 3 CR's and put in a dispute saying I had never lived at those addresses. All were cleared up within a couple weeks.
I called all three bureaus and cleaned up all the incorrect addresses they had for me last month. They were very accomodating, and promptly deleted them.

Sometimes a prior address is used for verification of a debt. I believe one of the recommendations for people in credit repair is to remove prior addresses so that there is less ability for junk debt buyers to verify accounts.

Also, when you get those random computerized confirmations of identity. I failed one of those that went something like:
Which of the following street address numbers is associated with you...
And none of the answers was associated with me! They had a wrong address on my reports.

+1. It's bad enough when it's a computer. I had to answer questions for something (can't remember which company I was dealing with now) to verify my identity and I was speaking with an actual person. He gave me an address that was off by one digit. I kept explaining to him that it wasn't my address, but that there was only one digit incorrect so I suspected it was a typo/transcription error. The CSR said I had to answer yes or no, so I said no, I have never lived at that address. The idiot failed me on the identification check.
The issue with the ID checks is that often times they get the info from the Lexis / Nexis (sp?) report. I know I had to do a verification recently and they asked about a really old (10+ years) address that I know for a fact is on on my 3 credit reports.
I pulled the Lexis / Nexis report a few years ago and there was some odd info on there but when I read their info on how to correct it they said "No can do as the consumer" or something to that effect.
