I'm a 21 year old college student. I have 3 credit cards that I pay in full every month. I have never been late paying these credit cards. I paid off my student loans and I now pay for school out of my pocket. I have a couple of things on my credit report that I want to take care of or try to get removed. Here's some of my issues..
1.) I have Nextel on my account back from 2006. When I looked at my credit report, Nextel and Sprint are listed on my credit report 3 times. How do I get Sprint taken off of my account??? I'm aware that they have merged, but I never had a Sprint account.
2.) I also have a Cingular account on my report. This was back in 2007. They keep selling my account to other Collection Agencies and for every CA that takes my account, it keeps going onto my credit report. How do I get the CA to stop reporting them on my credit report??? Should I just pay them off??
3.) I have a Bank of America account that is very similar to question #2. What should I do with this??
I guess what I'm asking is for some help. I'm young and made VERY stupid decisions. I want to start over now that I'm aware of how important your credit really is. I don't know if I should just pay these companies off or fight for deletion. PLEASE HELP ME!!!!!
Welcome to the forums!
Before you begin any of this, you need to know the DOFD and SOL on these accounts. Cell phone accounts have an SOL of two years. Lines of credit SOL vary by state, which you can google for yours.
1. Sprint or Nextel, it should show up as three separate accounts. Regardless of whether you had Sprint or not, since the company merged with Sprint and took its name, that's what will show up on your reports, the current name of the company. I had a loan with MBNA years before it was swallowed up by Bank of America, but on my report now it lists as Bank of America. Now, is this account current or derogatory. If it's current, and showing up as three current accounts, you may be better off letting it be wrong. If it's derogatory, dispute all three listings with the credit bureaus as duplicate accounts.
2. Every new CA that purchases the account gets to list on your report if it so chooses, but the old CAs have to delete their listings. You should DV the CA that's currently reporting after the SOL expires. If it's legit and you want to take care of it permanently, you can offer to do a PFD with the cuurent CA. If Cingular is reporting you can try to GW, same thing for Sprint if it's derogatory.
3. Follow the same advice as 2.
