Got a text from a debt collecter "central portfolio control", it seemed like a scam at first but I called and they definitely had my information and said this was related to an invoice from 2023 for medical.
My records show that I last owed $332 but they said that the amount was for $588 which would've been for the full invoice.
They said that I might be mistaken and may have been on a payment plan for which this invoice was not included.
How can I verify the amount before I pay anything? Should I ask for a debt validation?
appreciate any insight and tips.
thank you

Was the $332 the original balance, or was the original bill $588 and you paid it down to $332?
Have you received anything in writing from CPC? A text message alone doesn't prove the debt is valid. If this was their first contact, did they provide the required validation notice as per the FDCPA?
If CPC is collecting a valid debt, they should be able to identify the provider, date of service, original balance, any payments credited, and the amount currently owed, not just tell you, you might be mistaken... where's the written proof the debt is valid
I had a few invoices from this company related to specialty formula. I think it was three invoices for $588 each. I have a record of my payments and it looks like I paid down the first two , and the third I paid the balance down to $332 before my card expired and I completely forgot about it. They didn't reach out about my card and I guess I waited awhile to send to collections.
I will definitely get some sort of written notice from this company and have them validate the amount before I pay,
thank you!
Tell them they might be mistaken. Then ask how bigga boy this central portfolio control fella is, anyway. Suggest you might meet him in the parking lot and open a 55 gal. drum of whup' a$$ on him.

@emily15 The fact that you have records showing prior payments reducing the balance to $332 is great. It will make this easier to resolve through account records and your payment history than through parking lot negotiations involving 55 gallon drums.
PS... Any medical debt balance under $500 isn't reported by the big three (EX, EQ, TU)
