PLEASE SOMEONE PLEASE GIVE ME SOME SOUND ADVISE. I AM TRYING TO IMPROVE MY FICO SCORE. IT IS IN THE LOWER 500'S. I HAVE MY CREDIT REPORT. HOW DO I GO ABOUT CORRECTING/PAYING OFF DEBTS TO REMOVE THESE ITEMS FROM MY REPORT. WILL IT BE DIFFICULT TO DO IT MYSELF. ANOTHER QUESTION I HAVE IS WHETHER CREDIT REPAIR PROGRAMS ARE REPUTABLE. IF YOU, WOULD YOU RECOMMEND THAT I USE A CREDIT REPAIR PROGRAM OR TRY TO REPAIR MY CREDIT ON MY ONE.
VERY DESPERATE, PLEASE HELP
Nursebetty,
Welcome to the forums. First let me say that everyone here is very knowledgable so don't be afraid to ask a question. I would first read all the stickies related to rebuilding credit. I would recommend doing everything yourself, as you can do anything they can do, only you won't have any fees to pay.
Second, I would post individual issues on separate threads. You will get more responses than if you list 20 problems as one. Do you have any mistakes on your report or medical bills? There are no stupid questions here so ask away, and we'll see what we can do.

First off welcome, second don't panic and third remember its a long haul either way which requires patience. There are some reputable companies/law firms out there and they are governed by the federal regulation; but there are always people out there who are not legit, you need to do research into their practices, how they charge and what they perform. Generally services asking you to pay in advance or a set amount are not reputable. You should be charged a certain amount per item or per month for services rendered and you should be able to stop anytime and generally if they don't show results you should get your money back to some extent.
That being said, you can do it yourself but it will be difficult, time consuming and requires a lot of patience as you will hit a wall quite often. If you can hunker down and stay with it, then do it yourself. BUT BUT BUT, make sure you do research on each item that you are going to attack to make sure you don't make it worse. Make sure you know what grounds to challenge it on, what grounds to remedy it and what will result in the most benefit to YOU. As said already, there are alot of people here who have extensive knowledge and as long as you do your part to search, ask, listen, read and study the research, you will be fine.
I started in the mid 400's two years ago and now I am in the 700's range, so it can be done but I spent ALOT of hours researching, learning, trying trying trying and trying some more when it failed until it got here. So make sure you are willing to put in the work and stay with it. Good luck.
Hi nursebetty, welcome to the forums. You can do it all yourself. Yes it will be confudising at first but you will learn as you go. Keep in mind that you didn't get where you are now overnight & it will not go away overnight either.
Take your time and do 1 baddie at a time. This link will explain how to post questions and it has the frequently requested thread. It also has all the abbrevs that we use. Once you get going all the abbrevs make sense!

You need to know that you are working with federal law and state laws.
CRTP = federal law and deals with what and for how long anything can be on your CR
SOL = State law and deals with the time limit in which a creditor can file a lawsuit and win.
Dates are very important!!!!
DOFD = date of your first missed payment
DOLA =of your last activity ( either a payment or a charge)
Each state sets their own SOL

What hurts you scores are collections COs and late payments ( public records)
Try and match an OC and any CAs that are reporting the same debys.
Any medical debt is handled different so put them aside.
Please go slow and ask as many questions as you need!!!
