NFCU

For those who set up their accounts online, were you given immediate access?  Or did your account ahve to be reviewed?  And were you a family member, or the primary military connection?

I used to have an NFCU account years ago when I was a teen.  I honestly cannot remember how it was left.  I am hoping I can get set up with them again.  My dad was a Marine.

I live my life like I type, fast and with a lot of mistakes.

Re: NFCU

Along the same line, does NFCU ever have open enrollment? I'm a Navy vet but, that doesn't qualify me since I didn't do 20

Given that they have a restricted field of membership, I don't think Navy Federal could have an "open enrollment" even if they wanted to without jumping through hoops with the National Credit Union Administration.

Well, for argument's sake, though, I suppose they could add an affinity group, as did Pentagon FCU. I'm not eligible for PenFed under any of its main categories, but I got in through joining the National Military Families Association. (fyi for others reading: You can join even if you're not military --it's to support military families.) A newer affinity group is the American Red Cross.

Of course, that really opened things up to the hoi-polloi. Smiley Wink

Sure, they could.  But it would not be a simple event.

They'd need to a) modify the NFCU bylaws, b) get permission from the NCUA and c) cause some minor inconveniences / blowback from the DoD.

The problem with (c) is that although not a regulatory issue, NFCU does have a kind of inside track with the DoD -- quite unlike PenFed.  While DoD policy is not to get involved with issues between servicemembers and creditors barring extenuating circumstances.  However, most commanders will take calls and respond to queries from NFCU -- especially Navy and Marine commanders.  Even PenFed, strange as it may seem, doesn't seem to have the influence NFCU has with unit commanders -- especially after PenFed merged a while back with a "civilian" credit union.

Re: NFCU

Makes sense. There are obviously a lot of background elements in all this.

ok, now do me.  Smiley Wink  I am just wondering if their wanting to wait to verify me etc is a sign that my previous account was left in a bad way.  I seriously don't remember.

They say that unless your account has remained active, you have to establish eligibility all over again and start from scratch.
