No credit card required
Browse credit cards from a variety of issuers to see if there's a better card for you.
Doing an Amex transfer doesn't close the original card (at least in Canada), so I highly recommend both doing the transfer (you'll get a credit limit commensurate with your German credit score) and keeping the German card.
I have just over a year's history in the US (and don't actually live there) and having a "foot in the door" with Amex is a big help - I'm up to four US Amex cards now (for perqs and sign-up bonues) and two Canadian Amex cards.
Happy Sunday! Thanks again for your help :-) So after reading all this here is what I am thinking to do:
1) Try to increase my Citi Platinum SL with a SP only (they offer it on their website)
2) Apply for a Business CC at my bank where I have my business account (major US bank). They offer a basic rewards card w/o AF and I understand that I should be able to apply for one having a private CH with AoOA > 1yr, correct?
3) Apply for a private AmEx EveryDay using my German account and keep the German one open (did not know that this would work)
4) Wait for the mortgage and the CCs to report and garden for one year.
I would then only use one CC and let the others report $0 balance.
Now:
1) Would the Business CC go into my private CH and go into my utilization?
2) Can I let a card report $0 w/o them cancelling the card sooner or later? Would they ever increase SL w/o me using it?
3) Does getting a 3rd CC get me a stronger score in a year? I am anxious to do to much at a time (1 new mortgage, 3 new CC, thin file) and I would not need it anyway.

1) I don't have a solid answer to this question. Wait for someone with Business credit experience to respond, or post this question in the Business credit sub-forum: https://ficoforums.myfico.com/t5/Business-Credit/bd-p/businesscredit
2) You can let cards report a $0 balance to the bureaus -- but you do need to show some usage/activity to keep the cards open and allow for limit increases. Many creditors will either close the account or decrease the credit limit after 6 consecutive months of non-use. We recommend running a charge through each card at least once every 3 months.
Typically, the more often you use the card, the better your chances for limit increases (this does not necessarily mean high dollar usage, just consistant use).
If, however, you just want to keep a card open and are not too concerned with increasing the limit, you can simply charge something small every few months and pay it off before the statement closing date. This will allow you to show activity on the card while still reporting a $0 balance to the credit bureaus. Creditors report whatever your balance is on the Statement Closing Date, and that balance is to be paid by the Due Date (~25 days later). So, you can use your cards as much (or as little) as you wish, then pay it before the Statement Closing Date to report a $0 balance to the bureaus.
3) Yes. 3 CCs and 1 installment loan yields optimal FICO scoring. You can obtain all of that now then garden for a year to let everything age -- it's not too ambitious since your primary focus is building your profile.
After your 1 year gardening period, if you decide to apply for more peronal credit cards, it would be best to space out your apps to 1 every 6 months so you limit: (1) number of inquries and (2) how much your Average Age of Accounts (AAoA) is reduced due to new accounts.
thornback - your advise has been so incredibly helpful to me, many thanks!
Once I figure out how the Business CC reports (I will ask my banker tomorrow as well, he usually knew pretty well how they report) I will take your recommondation and open 2 CC for me personally to get a stronger file and just use cards with no annual fee so I can keep them open forever (or at least for a long time). I think it might be better to do it now rather than later to have all inquiries taken out of the calculation in 12 months. In the meantime I can try to get the limits increased using SP only. That might be my final setup for a verly long time then, I don't see a reason (as of today) to add any more cards after that. This will hopefully put me in a good position to apply for some more mortgages to invest in real estate. In Jan '21 I should have a good CH as well as two US tax reports, that will hopefully be a door opener by that time for conventional loans and low interest rates :-)
And time flies by...
