I'm reading through my CCH tax update here and saw something some of you may be interested in.
Starting in 2011 the IRS is going to start requiring credit card processors to report merchant activity to them. This is in an attempt to increase compliance rates by verifying receipts and fees from credit/debit transactions to what the merchant reports on their tax returns. This will not apply to those who have under $20k in gross receipts or 200 transactions per year. The processor will have to supply the IRS with the merchant TIN. If the reporting party cannot provide this, then 28% of the payment will be subject to backup withholding.
This could have implications with the merchant since the costs of compliance on the processor side will probably push down in terms of increased fees, making Credit and Debit transactions more expensive.
