No one can verify my identity

Hi,

I am a student, 18, trying to apply for my first credit card to build credit. I applied for a card that goes through Bank of America. I was declined. I then applied with my father as a cosigner, and was declined. They told me that they "Couldn't verify my idenity". They told me to send the credit bureau in Atlanta a copy of my drivers license and SSN to verify my identity. That was done over a month ago. I have received no response. I have tried calling all 3 bureaus, but they all just have some automated system. We then found another phone number for some "experian members". Called that, explained out situation and they couldn't help us since we werent members.

I don't know what to do here.

I've seen a few possible soultions via google search, but they are all for people who already have credit established, not for me who has never used credit. They've said, send via registered mail instead of standard mail to make sure it gets there. They've said call the credit bureau and tell them to look up your SSN, but of course it is all automated.

I've got a passport, SSN, drivers license, birth certificate. I don't understand how they "can't verify my identity"

While I realize they are doing this to make sure they don't send it to someone who isn't me, there is no information on how to conact these people and get it solved.

TL;DR Credit card company says they can't verify my ID, credit bureau hasn't responded to my info I sent them

Without a credit profile, there isn't a credit history.  I would suggest walking into a BoA and having them verify your identity.  In order to have a credit report you must have the following:

  • At least one account that has been open for six months or more
  • At least one undisputed account that has been reported to the credit bureau with in the past six months
  • No indication of deceased on the credit report (Please note: if you share an account with another person this may affect you if the other account holder is reported deceased).

I agree, you should go into the bank rather than apply online if that is what you've been doing. I got my first CC at 18 by going into the bank that I already had a checking and savings account with. If there is still a problem maybe they can help you sort it out.
