No verification and heated call with collection agency

My mother called me a while ago saying someone was calling her regarding a bill for me. It seemed like a collection agency. She said she thinks they have been leaving messages on her machine but she finally understood and asked for someone.

My mother gives me the number. I call. Its a guy he tells me. I vague remember the hospital visit, but I ask them how they got my mothers number and not mine. He tells me the number and address for the bill. I havent lived there since April 2010. I tell the guy sorry for the issue, but I wonder why they never updated my address. I'm sure if I saw a doctor and filled out paperwork I put my correct address and number.

So I tell the guy, yeah I dont want this on my report, so I want to pay it. I say, have you all reported this, because from my understand if the never contacted me and I have no awareness then it shouldnt be reported. He says he doesn't know and say's he'll check. I say thanks and can you please email me a copy of the bill. I never got one. This is my first time hearing this. He takes my email.

He transfers me to his manager she explains it hasnt been reported because its less than 90 days old. I say I need to check that because my understanding is that you are required by law to, and I want to make sure than once I pay this, i dont end up wiht a "paid collection" on my report. I just cleaned up my report as I am trying to buy a house. Also can you email me the information.  She says yes, says she need to make sure its sent then places me on hold after i give her my email.

I get a manager on the phone who is the BIGGEST jerk. he starts aruging with me about why I need a document. I say because I need to know its mine. He says that I should remember a hospital visit from 2 years ago. and pay it. I said excuse me but when my DTE (my electric company) gives me a bill, they dont call my mothers house, they send a bill to me via email, address or phone call to MY number. I need paperwork sir. I need to verfy with the hospital what the bill is and I can call them today. He says they already sent it to them so I can't pay them.
He says why was I asking about the credit report. I tell him and he says they don't give out letters stating it won't be reported I have to take his word. I tell him thats not true becase I had a similar incident before and they wrote my adress and number down wrong and when I finally check my report, saw it, I called them they removed it immediately when I paid. I said I need to know this won't be on my report.

He says people like me who ask questions are the type not to pay. I got angry at this point because I have repaid EVERY debt since getting a job. I tell him I make 120k a year and $350 won't hurt me, but I'm trying to buy a house and don't need bad things on my report. I said I've given my email to 2 people in your office and have yet to see a single document.  He tells me I should remeber the visit and pay the bill.

He is freaking aruging with me, when I was the one to call and resolve the bill

I was livid, standing in the hallway at my job angry nearly cursing.

This is why people HATE collection agencies. I have NEVER been rude to anyone who called me regardinga bill and every time I have had a collection call I'm nice and pay it. If i wasnt able to I wouldnt have called them. I CALLED THEM!!!! And this guy is being a horrible person.

Now I have money to pay this bill, but honestly I dont want to give it to the agency because of him. I'd rather pay it to the hospital directly or something.  he was soo mean. I am sooo angry.

Re: No verification and heated call with collection agency

They can be frustrating...a few points on your post. CAs are allowed to report without telling you first. However, whether they start calling, mailing you letters, or reporting they must mail you within 5 days a dunning letter. Chances are if they called your mom's, then they tried to mail that letter there too. Even before you receive that letter I would mail them a DV letter. Also don't call them. A CA's word is never their bond. They'll tell you whatever just to get you to pay it.

If they verify and you agree with the medical bill, then send a PFD if reporting. If not reporting, then you can try sending them a pay-for-not-reporting type of agreement to pay in exchange for not reporting. At the same time of awaiting for their DV response, I would contact the medical office and ask for a copy of that bill and would also ask them to pull the debt back from collections in exchange for paying it now. Some will do that for you. If they do that, then you wouldn't need to worry about a PFD. Also check your address with them while you are at it. IME, my hospital never ever updated my new address even after giving them new info with each visit. Some are stubborn in updating info.
