Set up an account yesterday for FIOS tv, internet, phone.
When I spoke to their credit department I asked them specifically if this INQ would be a SP or HP and they told me SP. If they would have said HP I wouldn't have gone through with it.
Is there a way to fight this?
Unfortunately this happens a lot, CSRs are either mis~informed or incorrectly trained when it comes to how their companies pull your CR.
You would have to fight it through Verizon, if you can get thru to a supervisor, then explain what happened and see what they can do....
Do you know how to tell if a credit-related CSR isn't telling you the truth? They are talking. I've said it before...never ever never trust anything they say. I'm sure they're well-intentioned, but they just don't know credit.
Ugh. I had the same problem when I bought a car recently. I told them "do no pull", I will get my own financing. He went and pulled any way. Not just once, but FIVE times!! In addition to my credit union pulling. My inquiries look ridiculous now, since I already had 11.
I always try to speak with a supervisor or the credit department. CSRs never know what they are talking about.

They only count as 1.

True, but when lenders look at it, they still see them. I was speaking with Discover about a CLI and the rep says "wow, they really gave you a lot of hits with that auto loan financing". I told him, yep, that's right, they sure did. And then he went ahead and gave me the increase.
As long as you insist that you were given the wrong info, you can fight it.
I could care less is the CSR was "mis-informed" or "not properly trained". Thats not my problem. You don;t work in the "CREDIT DEPARTMENT" of verizon just to twiddle your thumbs and give out misinformation.
You have a job to do, if you don;t know to do it, quit. I care about my credit, and I refuse to let some buffoon out here who doesn't know whats going on in the CREDIT DEPT. tell me it is what it is.
Spoke with a supervisor 2/5 and she said she is submitting paperwork to remove the INQ, allow 30 days for removal.
Im happy.
While the permissible purpose inquiry for auto loans is a bit of a side issue to the main post, for a great discussion of the FTCs opinion on permissible pulls by auto dealers, go to the FTC web page on FCRA advisory opinions, and take a look at their opinion letter dated 2/11/98.
At least in their opinion, the permissible purposes by auto dealers are very restrictive without your express permission. Actual contract negotiations showing a specific purchase offer by the consumer was expressed as being necessary.
