Ok what should I do? This should be easy!

I had an account with Credit One Bank and had 1 30 day late in NOV '04. I sent a GW and got response that they needed the account number. Well I don't know it so I called them up and spoke to 3 people. Turns out I don't exist in their systems, even their archived systems. The lady told me to dispute it because Credit One wouldn't be able to verify it and it would be removed from my credit reports. So what should I do? Will removing this account as a whole hurt? I'd hate to remove an account that could be helping. If you need more info please let me know! Thanks! OH and the account was closed, had a balance of $700, high balance of $900.

I wouldn't dispute to remove the tradeline, I would dispute it as never late.  IF they cannot verify the late only the late should be removed.  If you dispute as not mine, the entire tradeline will be removed.

Ok so it should be safe to dispute the late but don't dispute as the account not being mine. So what will the CRA's do once Credit One says hey we can't find his account on our systems? They won't (CRA's) won't take the initiative to remove the whole account right? I just don't want to shoot myself in the foot.

They shouldn't as long as you dispute it as never late.  I won't lie to you, I have heard of accoutns being removed completly.  That has been the experience with either written disputes of over the phone disputes I think factoring in human error on the CSR's side.  How old and how severe are the lates?

The credit bureaus depend on the issuer either verifying the info or not.  Usually if they do not verify the late payment, the late payment history is removed, not the enitire account.  Called one of the bureaus to be sure.

Just double checked for a three year old 30 day late, its not worth the trouble

Related personal experience with EX dispute.

Providian Financial opened Dec 2000.  DOLA May 2002.  Account closed at consumers request.
Balance not on record, past due amount not on record (this account is PIF though).

1 30 day late Feb 2001

I disputed this as never late in order to get the 30 day off and retain the otherwise good history.  They wiped the entire account within 2 days, which I was not happy with but I am now understanding that WAMU is taking them over and the records with Providian may be old and they are not investigating small disputes.

So, it just goes to show you... with an old small disputes on closed accounts sometimes if the records are not there, you will not get your positive update.  However, you will probably get a deletion.  Can't win 'em all but now I am understanding why I got the deletion, and I'll take it.  Smiley Happy  For me, this TL was hindering me more than helping me with account age.

I saw another post about this bank also being First National Bank of Marin. Should I try to contact them for GW on the late. Or just drop this whole thing and not stress over it. :0) B.

Personally, you can try that angle if its really bothering you but a 30 day late that old is not really affecting your score at this point.  Even someone eyeballing your report is not likely to look at it twice.  What would they question? Was the mail runniong late that year?  GW is a good idea if you must but don't dispute.

Personal preference.  I am considering writing to WaMu since my Providial TL is still on 1 other report... going to ask if they can update it properly and reinstate it on my CBRs.  I am not stressing over it and it's on the back burner for when I have time and want to deal with it.  Never hurts to try as they say.  Suppose though I should write to the Providian address on my reports first huh...

I would try but that's just me.

Ok cool. I think I might give it a go just to see if First National has my account or if it is gone from there too.

Thanks, I appreciate the help!
