I just received a letter from a CA stating that I owe $211.29 for a telephone number I had in 2001/2002. In the past, I have had some issues with my credit report and a few years ago, I worked on cleaning up my entire credit report and getting rid of any late payments, etc. This was never on my credit report and I didn't even know I had this outstanding debt. What is the SOL in NY on this debt? I don't want it to end up on my credit report now, as I'm in the process of hopefully buying a house and I have worked so hard at fixing my credit. If I respond to this letter by calling or sending a letter of my own, is it going to put it up on my credit report? Any advice is greatly appreciated.
Thank you!

Have you applied for your mortgage? The credit bureaus sell such information to collection agencies. CAs figure that if you are stable enough for a mortgage that you've likely got some $$ saved for down payment. They want a piece of that pie and come out of the woodwork to get it. If you haven't opted out yet, you may want to do so.
Do you KNOW that this is too old to be on your credit report? What do you think the date is that it first became delinquent. It can't show on your reports if that date of first delinquency (DOFD) is over 7 1/2 years old.
I don't know the SOL for your state. You should be able to Google that.
If it is too old for your credit report and has passed SOL, send them a DV letter.
