Is there an easy way to know if you are Opt'd Out or In? I've gone back and forth so many times I can't remember which one I am. I am asking because if I'm Opt'd out I can't get any pre-approvals online, correct?
Regardless of your score, if you're not getting any offers in the mail ever, you're opted out. That's the easiest way to tell. If you have a copy of your report, I think it says on the bottom somewhere if you've opted out to prescreened offers or not. I think I saw it on one of my reports last month. I saw it somewhere. You can also go to optoutprescreen.com and choose the "opt in" option and see what it says.
But you are correct. Online preapprovals will only offer "suggestions" or "recommendations." I'm opted out. It's kind of a relief.
If you're not sure and you want one or the other then opt in or out via the site.
Opting out does not per se prevent the receipt of unsolicited offers for credit.
It only prevents creditors from obtaining your name from a listing provided by a CRA of consumers who meet set criteria submitted by the creditor from screening listins provided by the CRA of comsunemrs whose credti files meet the stated criteria.
Creditors can obtain consumer names from sources other than a listing provided by the CRAs.
Being opted in can provide consumers who might be seeking new credit with an indication that their credit file is now adequate to meet minimum criteria.
Inquires for screened listings of consumers must be coded as soft, and thus provide consumers with soft pull indications of likely qualirication for new credt.
Offers made by use of a listing provided by a CRA are "firm offers for credit" as opposed to some undefined "pre-approval."
