Opting Out doesn't last five years.

Somehow DH got opted in.  How do I know?  Mail!

Also, Dear Brother also got opted back in last year!  (Same thing, mail).

How does a person get opted in when they didn't ask for it?  It's a scam.

There is/was more than one to opt out. One way was for a limited time and the other was permanently. I opeted out over a decade ago and still no offers.

Re: Opting Out doesn't last five years.

The opt-out process is specified in FCRA 604(c).

If the consumer notifies the CRA that they wish their name to be excluded from any list provided by the CRA to those requesting the consumer's name and address for sending firm offers of credit, the CRA is required to send the consumer a formal notice of election form under their estalbished notification system.

If the consumer does not sign and return that notification form, along with proper proof of identity, the opt-out automatically expires after five years.  The CRA is not required to send notification of that expiration... it is automatic based on the consumer's failure to have provided the signed election form.

Re: Opting Out doesn't last five years.

It has been about 1.5 years.  No longer.  For both DB and DH.  I know about the 5 years, and yes, thanks, I did go to that site to opt out for all of us.
