PFD Phone Call

I just called Progressive Asset Management about a collection for $106 that I would like to PFD. I told him that I beleived I had paid this, but was willing to pay the $106 just to have it deleted. He told me that I would need to speak to the original creditor and explain this to them and have them sign off on it before they (the CA) would delete the collection. Is this normal or was he playing me? As I understood it, I thought the CA could make those kinda of decisions without the consent of the OC. He then told me that if I sent the money, he would delete it, but said he would not send that to me in writing first, which definately sounded shady. anyway, if you have any advice on how to proceed I would appreciate it, thanks!

Re: PFD Phone Call

I was in a situation very similar to this not too long ago. They way we worked it out was by fax. I wrote a PFD letter that said I would promise to pay within x hours and that they would promise to delete. I faxed it to them, they signed, faxed it back, and I gave them my CC number. The whole thing was over in like 1 hour and we pretty much stayed on the phone with each other while we did it.

Re: PFD Phone Call

Since he told you to contact the OC, that means the CA is just assigned the debt and does not own it. It is always better to deal with the OC. Call the OC and see if they will agree to a PFD. If they do, get it in writing before you send any money. Pay the OC not the CA unless the OC will not accept the money.

You can also find out from the OC if they show it as paid.

If you go this route be sure to have the oc yank the debt back from the ca BEFORE you pay them otherwise you'll have the collection stay on your report with a big fat "paid" next to it for 7 years.
