PFD for Cavalry Portfolio?

DW has a collection account for about $300 with Cavalry Portfolio for an unpaid Sprint bill. DV to CA showed that that includes several late charges of $15, plus it would include about $100 bill and whatever it is they charge for early termination. The only reason it went unpaid in the first place was because they couldn't get her plan right and kept adding services to her $40 plan that she did not want. When she called to cancel the service and ask for refund they refused refund and said service would be cancelled only to show up on next bill. After several $100 bills she cancelled and did not pay. DOFD is about 2.5 years ago.

Is there even a point in trying a PFD for $50 if we explain the situation and say we refuse anything more out of principle?

Re: PFD for Cavalry Portfolio?

It is always worth a try to settle for less on a PFD; however, just remember, CA's are slugs, bottom-feeders, leeches, and a all around steaming pile of dung.

Having said the positive things I can think of about CA's, their job is to make as much money off of you as they can.  I seriously doubt they will accept $50 for PFD, but you might be able to try for 1/2 or 3/4 their asking price.

One item of note, I have dealt with Cavalry Portfolio on an unpaid Sprint bill.  They would not settle for less, so I PIF.  This was before I knew about PFD.  I then disputed the account on my CRA as "not mine" (unethical - not recommended) and it was removed.  Just my experience.

Good luck!

what is your SOL?     PFD (for less) work much better past SOL. That doesn't mean that it won't work now.

Who owns the account OC or CA.  Call Sprint & see if they still have account. If they do send them a PFD and see what happens........is sprint reporting on CR?

Re: PFD for Cavalry Portfolio?

Did they send proof that they are licensed in your state?

Check with your state regulatory body for CAs - the bill I had from Sprint/Nextel was removed  without it being validated.  The CA was not licensed to collect in this state!

Re: PFD for Cavalry Portfolio?

Every state is different. some do not  license a CA. Even if a license is required, some CAs will still try to collect. That is why you need to know   I had a CA not licensed in my state I reported them. State told me that I should not pay !!!!

Re: PFD for Cavalry Portfolio?

I'm in NY where SOL is 6 years so we're not even close yet. For DV all they sent was a copy of last Sprint bill but no proof that they are legally able to collect this debt (how exactly is this supposed to look?) and nothing stating that they have a right to conduct business in NY. Would the next logical step be to send another letter stating that in verifying the debt they did not provide us with this information and that we are requesting it?

Re: PFD for Cavalry Portfolio?

BUMP I should add that at this time the CA isn't really bothering anyone and we have no intention to pay it now. We are however planning to apply for a mortgage in about 3 years or so, by which time we'd want it off. Should we send another letter now asking them for proof that they are licensed in NY and if they answer just leave it for some time, or would it best to wait until we are closer to SOL to resume contact?
